Description
Yoshiharu Kubo, a charismatic and highly skilled soccer player, returned to Japan after years in Germany. Standing 179 cm tall with short dark brown comma hair swept left and dark brown eyes, he declined offers from prominent soccer schools to co-found a new team at soccer-less Kakegawa High School alongside former middle school teammate Atsushi Kamiya.
As both player and coach, Kubo crafted tactics and training regimens that propelled the fledgling team to the prefecture semifinals in their debut year. His "fun-soccer" philosophy—emphasizing joy and freedom—inspired teammates and rivals alike. With sharp observational skills, he identified hidden potential in others, notably honing Toshihiko Tanaka’s left leg into the devastating "Meteor Shot."
During a prefecture semifinal against Kakekita, trailing 1-2, Kubo executed an iconic solo goal, dribbling past all eleven opponents to equalize. He collapsed immediately after scoring and succumbed to concealed leukemia complications on August 9, 1991, having hidden his illness from longtime girlfriend Minako Kitahara and closest friends while enduring solitary emotional struggles. His final act entrusted Tanaka with scoring the winning goal, symbolizing legacy transfer.
A prequel spin-off, "Shoot! Legend of Yoshiharu Kubo," chronicled his return from Germany and Kakegawa’s founding. His surname Kubo (久保) means "long time/protect," while Yoshiharu (嘉晴) signifies "applaud/praise" and "clear weather," reflecting his enduring impact. Posthumously, his number 10 jersey passed to Tanaka, and his "fun-soccer" ethos drove the team to national victory. His signature solo goal was later replicated by Tanaka and Kazuhiro Hiramatsu, cementing his technical legacy.
