TV-Series
Description
In the alternate world of Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya, Irisviel von Einzbern, often called Iri, is very much alive and enjoys a happy marriage with her husband, Kiritsugu Emiya. Together, they are the parents of Illyasviel and the adoptive parents of Shirou Emiya. Due to their constant travels abroad, Irisviel has entrusted the care of her children to their homunculus attendants, Leysritt and Sella. Her backstory in this continuity diverges significantly from other versions. In Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei!, she reveals to her daughters the truth of their origins, explaining that a ritual known as the Holy Grail War once took place in Fuyuki City, for which Illya was originally created to act as the Holy Grail in the Fourth War. She and Kiritsugu were given a choice and decided to abandon the Einzbern family and work to stop the ritual, an act that led to the family's downfall. This divergence means that the events that would have necessitated her role as a homunculus are no longer present, leaving the exact nature of her existence in this world ambiguous.
Irisviel’s personality is warm, carefree, and often playfully mischievous, though she is capable of great wisdom and seriousness when the situation demands it. She is almost always seen with a gentle smile and has a ditzy, overly cheerful demeanor that belies her deep understanding of magecraft and the dangers surrounding her family. She takes a cunning pleasure in teasing her adoptive son, Shirou, often joking about his "harem" of girls, which includes Illya, Kuro, and Miyu, and she has been known to take and smuggle pictures of him. Her maternal intuition is incredibly sharp, allowing her to sense when Illya is in trouble, and she has a close, understanding relationship with her daughters. Despite her loving nature, she can be strict when it comes to discipline and shares her counterpart's infamous reputation for reckless and dangerous driving, showing no regard for traffic safety or the condition of her car.
Irisviel’s primary motivation is the preservation of her family's peaceful daily life. She fights to protect the happiness she and Kiritsugu chose over the Einzbern's grand rituals. Her role in the story becomes much more prominent in 2wei!, where she returns home to help deal with the emergence of Chloe von Einzbern, a separated entity born from Illya's sealed powers. While shown to be aware of magecraft and the Holy Grail War, she is unfamiliar with the Class Cards, noting their only similarity to the original ritual is the Servant classes themselves. She acts as a mediator and a source of crucial information, explaining the past to her children and ultimately resolving the conflict between Illya and Chloe by adopting the latter into the family. Her wisdom is also shown when she confronts Caren Hortensia, demanding to know the truth about a new, mysterious Holy Grail ritual that appears to be unfolding. Her key relationships are strongly centered on her family. She is very close to Illya and deeply in love with Kiritsugu, with whom she works as a partner to dismantle the Grail system. Her relationship with Shirou is that of a teasing but affectionate mother, and she quickly adapts to include the newly created Kuro as her daughter.
Irisviel demonstrates notable proficiency in magecraft, particularly in alchemy and the creation and forging of matter. She can transform long, flexible wires into powerful constructs, such as a giant hand strong enough to break the ground and immobilize opponents, which she has used to discipline her children. She is also one of the few people fully aware of the immense, sealed power that resides within Illya. Her development in the series is subtle but significant, as she transitions from a mostly absent, globe-trotting mother to a central figure who actively confronts a new magical crisis. Her defining moment in 2wei! is her immediate acceptance and adoption of Chloe, showing her ability to embrace a bizarre and unexpected situation and expand her love to accommodate a new family member, further demonstrating that her primary goal is the happiness and unity of those she considers her children.
