Description
Pandaemon Yōdani, also styled as Yōdani Rōshi and occasionally romanized as Roshi Yodani, is a supporting character in the anime and manga Tokyo ESP. He is an elderly martial arts master who formerly served as the martial arts instructor for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, and in that capacity he trained a large portion of the Tokyo Police Force, including Rinka Urushiba's father. This long connection to Rinka's family leads him to become a mentor and combat instructor to Rinka herself once she is drawn into conflict with other espers.

His most immediately recognizable trait is that he is almost always seen wearing a panda mascot costume, which makes him appear comical and eccentric despite his standing as a genuine master of martial arts. This odd presentation reflects a playful and mischievous personality. His methods as a teacher are unorthodox and sometimes blunt, and his direct hands-on instruction of Rinka includes a gag technique nicknamed the Panda-Pai Fist, in which he thrusts his fist toward her chest. The routine frames him as a teasing, slightly lecherous old man, but beneath the humor he remains a serious and effective trainer.

Yōdani is himself an esper, possessing the power of clairvoyance. This ability allows him to perceive events beyond ordinary sight, making him a valuable source of information and guidance for the protagonists. His motivations center on preparing and supporting the younger generation, particularly Rinka, to face the dangers posed by escalating esper conflicts in Tokyo. He acts as an ally and mentor figure rather than a frontline combatant, drawing on his experience as a police instructor and his foresight to assist the main characters from behind the scenes.

Within the story, he serves as a stabilizing presence and a link between the older generation of law enforcement and martial arts tradition and the young espers at the center of the events. His relationship with Rinka is that of a grandfather-like teacher who trains her seriously while also treating her with teasing humor, and his bond with her father is rooted in the years he spent training the police force. In terms of development, Yōdani remains a constant and dependable supporting figure rather than a character with his own major arc; his eccentricity provides comic relief, while his clairvoyance and martial expertise offer practical help at important moments.
