Description
Naoto Takayama is the main protagonist of Rail Wars!. He is a second-year student at Kiryu Railway High School enrolled in the Passenger Transportation Department. His deep love for railways began in childhood when, as a young boy, he collapsed in the snow from hunger and was rescued by a passing train. The railway worker who saved him left a lasting impression, inspiring Naoto to dream of becoming a Shinkansen or maglev train driver. He applied to Japanese National Railways and was selected, but was assigned to the Railway Public Safety Force rather than his preferred driving position, becoming the deputy leader of the Fourth Peacekeeper Squad, also known as K4.
Naoto is characterized by a gentle and kind-hearted nature, treating everyone with respect and consideration. He is selfless and willing to put himself in harm's way when he believes it is necessary, reflecting both courage and a strong sense of responsibility. Despite a tendency to avoid trouble, once a situation arises he commits fully to resolving it. He is highly knowledgeable about all types and models of trains, and his passion for railways serves as both his motivation and a source of confidence. Others in the security force note his ability to bring out the best in people, and he earns the trust of his squad leaders and peers.
His role in the story revolves around leading the Fourth Peacekeeper Squad alongside his teammates, handling incidents ranging from minor lost-child cases to serious bomb threats and confrontations with RJ, an extremist group that seeks to privatize the railway system. Naoto's initial dream of a peaceful life as a driver gradually shifts as he embraces his responsibilities within the security force, driven by his dedication to protecting the railway he loves.
Key relationships include Haruka Kōmi, the first person he befriends after accidentally embarrassing her; she develops romantic feelings for him, and it is later suggested he saved her during their childhood. Aoi Sakurai initially treats him coldly after a misunderstanding but grows to respect and trust him, eventually confessing her feelings, though she departs for America for several years, and they promise to wait for each other. Shō Iwaizumi is his first male friend, an athletic and passionate fellow student who respects Naoto as deputy leader. Nana Iida, the squad leader, holds him in high regard and frequently reassures him of his judgment. Mari Sasshō is a childhood acquaintance he reconnects with, and she also appears to have feelings for him.
Throughout the story, Naoto develops from a boy seeking an easy, comfortable life into a capable deputy leader who makes difficult decisions and takes responsibility for his team. His encyclopedic knowledge of railways, composed judgment, and unwavering sense of duty make him an indispensable member of the squad. In his personal life, he owns an N-scale model railway set, reflecting his passion even at home.
