Description
Alfred von Landsberg, a disgraced veteran of the Lippstadt League’s failed rebellion against Reinhard von Lohengramm, plunges into the shadows of clandestine resistance after the Imperial Civil War. Recruited by Phezzan operatives, he infiltrates Neue Sanssouci’s labyrinthine underpasses—knowledge gleaned from his aristocratic past—to abduct child sovereign Erwin Josef II, envisioning the act as a noble crusade to restore the Goldenbaum Dynasty. His fervent idealism, rooted in feudal notions of chivalry and dynastic loyalty, falters when confronted by the emperor’s indifference and the operation’s grim pragmatism.
Allied with Leopold Schumacher, a disillusioned former comrade who openly mocks the mission’s hypocrisy, Landsberg pursues the plot as a final assertion of pride and legacy. Though the kidnapping briefly disrupts the empire, Erwin Josef’s passive disdain strips their efforts of imagined heroism, exposing the hollowness of Landsberg’s archaic convictions. The incident inadvertently strengthens Reinhard’s strategic position, providing pretext to escalate hostilities against the Free Planets Alliance via Phezzan. Landsberg’s quixotic defiance mirrors the fading aristocracy’s refusal to surrender to Reinhard’s new order, illustrating the corrosive clash between romanticized tradition and the galaxy’s inexorable shift toward ruthless realpolitik.
