Description
Ukyo Samonji serves as the commanding officer of the Independent Unit 8 in the Arandas military. Known by his rank of Captain, he is a career soldier who carries the immense weight of a past tragedy that has come to define his present demeanor.

In his younger days, during a posting at a remote research facility called Argent Point, Samonji was a rigid, by-the-book soldier. His stoic and seemingly unfeeling exterior clashed directly with the idealism of Reika Nanjo, a researcher who dreamed of creating a war without casualties. Through their interactions, however, his gruff shell began to crack; Reika admired his ability to watch over others with a calm demeanor, and she asked him to continue looking out for her. This relationship began to soften him, and his small unit grew closer as a result. This period of personal growth came to a devastating end when a test of unmanned weapons went horribly wrong. As the machines ran amok, the military command decided to terminate both the experiment and Reika along with it. In a shocking display of emotion that explains his current place on the military's blacklist, Samonji physically assaulted his superior officers and desperately tried to rescue her. He arrived too late, and Reika was killed in front of him. This event is the single most formative moment of his life, and the guilt of being unable to save her, coupled with the trauma of witnessing the military's willingness to sacrifice its own, forged him into the man seen on the front lines today.

Personality-wise, Samonji is the very definition of stoic. He is a man of few words, often presenting a cold and unapproachable facade to his subordinates and superiors alike. His quiet nature can be mistaken for aloofness or cruelty, but it is a carefully constructed defense mechanism born from loss. Beneath his icy surface lies a fiercely protective core. Having failed to protect someone important to him once, he is now obsessively dedicated to the safety of his squad. He is highly competent and takes his responsibilities seriously, believing that a commander's primary duty is to ensure his soldiers return home. This trauma also manifests as a deep-seated mistrust of military brass and the cold, calculated politics of war, which he views as a machine that casually grinds up good people.

The Captain's primary role in the story is that of a mentor and a foil to the hotheaded protagonist, Susumu Tokimune. As the commander of the 8th Independent Unit, he issues the orders and sets the strategic framework for the unit's actions. He is the steady hand on the tiller, constantly trying to reign in Tokimune's reckless impulses while secretly recognizing a fire in the young pilot that mirrors his own past. His primary motivation is to complete his mission while preserving the lives of his unit. He carries a specific burden regarding Tokimune, as he personally knew and felt responsible for the death of his sister, Reika. This connection adds a paternalistic and guilt-ridden layer to his interactions with the protagonist.

His relationship with Tokimune is fraught with tension born from misunderstanding. The Captain’s secretive nature clashes with Susumu’s need for answers about his sister. When the truth of the Argent Point incident is finally revealed, the dynamic shifts, and Susumu gains a new, if complicated, respect for his commander. Within the unit, he maintains a professional distance, but his second-in-command, Saori Suzushiro, acts as his bridge to the rest of the crew, understanding his moods and supporting his decisions. Other veterans, like the mechanic Chief and Colonel Shizuma Izumi, an old friend, represent the few people who know the man he was before the tragedy.

Over the course of the series, Samonji experiences a subtle but significant development. While he begins as a purely reactionary commander dealing with the crisis at hand, his past eventually catches up with him. He is forced to confront the ghosts of Argent Point when the Argevollen's U-Link system—a direct descendant of the technology that killed Reika—begins to overwhelm Tokimune. Ultimately, his quest for atonement leads him to make a difficult choice: to take control of the Perphevollen, a new unit of unmanned weapons based on the same flawed technology. He does this to spare his unit, and Tokimune in particular, from being consumed by the military's new weapon. This decision is the culmination of his arc; rather than raging against the system that destroyed his past, he steps directly into the fire to protect his future, finding a measure of peace by finally taking responsibility for the ghost of Reika that has haunted him for so long.

As a soldier, Samonji is a highly skilled Trail Krieger pilot, though he spends more of the series in a command role than a combat one. His true notable ability lies in his tactical acumen and his commanding presence. He is a capable strategist who can read the flow of battle and manage his diverse squad of personalities under extreme pressure. His background is in standard military doctrine, which serves as a deliberate contrast to the unpredictable, data-driven performance of the Argevollen. His physical strength and repressed fury, witnessed during his assault on the officers at Argent Point, suggest that when he does enter the fray, he is a formidable and relentless fighter, driven by a willpower that has been hardened by years of silent suffering.
