Description
Yang Wen-li was born on April 4, 767 UC to a civilian merchant family. His mother died when he was five, leaving him to be raised by his father, Yang Tai-long, aboard an interstellar trade ship operating between Heinessen and Fezzan. Financial hardship struck after his father's death, as the family's assets consisted of worthless fake artwork collections. This forced Yang to abandon plans for civilian historical studies and enroll in the Free Planets Alliance Officer Academy under a tuition waiver requiring military service upon graduation. Initially in the War History Studies Department, its dissolution led to his transfer to Strategic Studies. He graduated mid-class in 787 UC, his average academic performance reflecting disinterest rather than lack of ability.

Early military assignments included serving as a staff officer to Rear Admiral Arthur Lynch during the Imperial invasion of El Facil in 788 UC. When the Alliance fleet abandoned the planet, Yang organized the successful evacuation of over three million civilians, earning widespread popularity and the title "Hero of El Facil." During this event, he first encountered Frederica Greenhill. Subsequent postings included managing a prisoner-of-war camp on Econia, where he handled a rebellion and formed connections with future key staff members Fyodor Patrichev and Murai.

Tactical recognition grew during battles under Vice Admiral Paetta's command. At Legnica, Yang identified the risk of atmospheric ignition but failed to convince Paetta to ascend the fleet, resulting in catastrophic losses when Imperial forces triggered a firestorm. During the Fourth Battle of Tiamat, he volunteered for a diversionary attack using dummy ships to simulate a larger force. When Imperial commander Reinhard von Lohengramm saw through the deception, Yang positioned his ship beneath Reinhard's flagship to take him hostage, enabling the Alliance fleet's retreat.

The Battle of Astarte in 796 UC marked a career turning point. As strategic advisor to Paetta, Yang advocated joining Alliance fleets against Reinhard's concentrated force. After Paetta ignored this advice and sustained injuries, Yang assumed command. His tactical adjustments allowed a strategic withdrawal despite heavy Alliance casualties. The government framed this as a victory, bestowing the title "Hero of Astarte" and promoting him to commodore.

Political manipulation followed his rise. To remove him from domestic politics, Alliance leader Job Truniht assigned Yang to command the newly formed 13th Fleet—a force half the standard size, composed of battle survivors and raw recruits—with orders to capture the impregnable Iserlohn Fortress. Collaborating with mercenary unit Rosen Ritter led by Walter von Schenkopp, Yang devised an infiltration strategy. Disguised as Imperial personnel, the Rosen Ritter seized the fortress command center during the Fifth Battle of Tiamat, enabling the 13th Fleet's occupation. This success established Yang as Iserlohn's commander.

Throughout his career, Yang consistently expressed a desire to retire and study history, disliking both war and military culture. He adopted war orphan Julian Mintz, viewing him as a surrogate son, and later married Frederica Greenhill. His flagship transitioned from Ulysses to Hyperion. Despite his reputation for battlefield ingenuity, his command style relied heavily on talented subordinates like Dusty Attemborough and Schenkopp.

Politically, Yang remained a staunch democrat, believing military leaders should never hold political power. This conviction made him vulnerable to government suspicion. During an inquiry orchestrated by Fezzani agent Rupert Kesserling, Alliance officials detained and interrogated him over baseless coup allegations. While under house arrest, he reflected on systemic corruption but rejected suggestions to seize power, stating such actions would violate democratic principles.

Following the Free Planets Alliance's collapse, Yang joined the El Facil Revolutionary Government. On June 1, 800 UC, he was assassinated by an Earth Cult operative.
