TV-Series
Description
Mayura Daidouji is the principal human protagonist in the series, a sixteen-year-old high school student with long pink hair and red eyes who serves as the enthusiastic president of her school’s Mystery Club. Her fascination with the occult and strange occurrences began when her mother gave her a book titled Detective Nyanko before her mother died of illness, leaving Mayura to live with her father, a Shinto priest. Despite this background, she possesses no sixth sense or spiritual perception at all, which prevents her from ever discerning the true nature of the supernatural beings she later encounters.

Driven by an insatiable love for mysteries, Mayura initially meets the detective Loki after chasing a black cat that had taken a talking doll she discovered. Her search leads her to the Enjaku Detective Agency, where she forcefully appoints herself as Loki’s assistant and visits the agency every day after school hoping to experience a real mystery. On most of Loki’s cases, she either inadvertently hinders the investigation or becomes incapacitated, such as by falling asleep, causing Loki to regard her as a burden. However, she occasionally proves genuinely helpful, demonstrating that her persistence has some value.

Mayura’s personality is bright, obsessive, and somewhat naive. She is known for her love of ramen and her habit of hanging around the detective agency in search of real-life mystery experiences. She remains completely unaware that Loki is a Norse god or that his companion Yamino and other visiting beings are divine, as she cannot see spirits or auras. Her key relationships include her mentor-like dynamic with Loki, who grows to rely on her despite his initial annoyance; a friendship with the god Freyr, who develops a romantic admiration for her and calls her his Yamato Nadeshiko; and her caring but somewhat distant father.

As the series progresses, Mayura’s motivations shift from pure curiosity to a deeper emotional connection with Loki. Near the end of the anime, she openly states that Loki is a very important person to her, hinting at romantic feelings. When Loki chooses to return to the world of the gods, she searches for him desperately and, upon being granted a wish by the god Odin, wishes to see Loki one last time even if only for a moment. This wish highlights her growth from a girl obsessed with mysteries into someone willing to sacrifice her own curiosity for the sake of a meaningful farewell. Mayura has no supernatural powers; her notable abilities are her boundless enthusiasm, her dogged determination, and her capacity to act as an emotional anchor for the otherwise aloof Loki. Her role in the story is to serve as the human lens through which the audience experiences the supernatural conflicts, providing both comic relief and genuine heart.
