Description
E-chan is a small, accidental shikigami, or spirit familiar, who appears in the storyline of Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok. The creature came into being when the god Loki, trapped in a child's body and stripped of most of his divine power, performed a necromantic ritual that went wrong. What he intended to summon was a powerful shinigami, but the failed spell resulted in the tiny, chibi-like being he would later name E-chan. Despite the failed summoning, E-chan proves to be a loyal and surprisingly useful companion to the detective.

In terms of appearance, E-chan is a diminutive creature with pink fur, prominent animal ears, and large red eyes. Due to its nature, E-chan is invisible to most ordinary humans who lack any form of spiritual perception. For example, the series' main heroine, Mayura Daidoji, cannot see E-chan at all. However, the creature is visible to those with spiritual abilities, such as Mayura's father or the gods who walk among humans. E-chan communicates primarily with a distinctive vocal sound often transcribed as "punyan," and because of this, the creature is sometimes affectionately called "Punyan-san" by fans.

The shikigami's personality, while not deeply explored due to its limited role, is generally portrayed as endearing, obedient, and playful. E-chan is fiercely devoted to Loki, who gave it a name derived from the Japanese word "erai," meaning amazing. The creature shows a capacity for learning, as it begins to develop limited speech and learn how to talk over the course of the narrative. E-chan's motivations are simple and centered almost entirely on serving Loki and assisting him with his detective work and other divine affairs.

E-chan plays a small yet valuable supporting role. One of its primary abilities is the power to absorb demons and other malevolent spiritual entities. Furthermore, E-chan possesses the ability to freely transform its shape, becoming smaller than it already is or changing into various inanimate objects. Loki frequently uses this power to have E-chan transform into items that can be used in the field, such as an exploding doll, or to send messages. The shikigami's body also holds significant magical potential; on one occasion, parts of E-chan's body were used by the goddess Verdandi to forge a powerful ring, which Loki later processed into his weapon, Levatein.

E-chan's relationship with Loki is the most significant in the story, defined by the master-servant dynamic between a god and his created familiar. Loki treats E-chan with a degree of affection, relying on the creature's unique abilities for his cases. E-chan is also involved in some of Loki's lighter moments, such as when he uses the invisible shikigami to play tricks on the spiritually aware Daidoji, scaring him by having E-chan appear or move things unexpectedly. While E-chan is not a primary driver of the overarching plot concerning Ragnarok, its creation and continued presence serve as a demonstration of Loki's residual magical abilities and his unorthodox methods. The character shows very minor development over the course of the story, primarily in learning to speak and becoming a more effective assistant, but remains a static and adorable side character whose main purpose is to support Loki and add a layer of supernatural charm to his detective agency.
