Description
Hannah Annafellows is a central character in Black Butler II and a demon who serves as the sole maid of the Trancy household. She is an original character created specifically for the second anime season and does not appear in the source manga. Physically, Hannah is depicted as a tall woman with long, silvery-lavender hair often styled into a braid, dark or tanned skin, and a generally melancholic expression. She typically wears a purple Victorian-style maid’s dress. For much of the story, she has her left eye covered with a bandage or eyepatch because Alois Trancy injured it early in their acquaintance.
Hannah’s past is the key to understanding her motivations. Before coming to the Trancy estate, she was a demon who had grown bored with her long, immortal existence. She was summoned by a young boy named Luka Macken, the younger brother of a boy who would later become Alois Trancy. Luka formed a contract with Hannah, wishing to destroy the village where he and his brother lived in poverty and misery to help Alois. In fulfilling this contract, Hannah devoured Luka’s soul. However, she was profoundly moved by Luka’s selfless love and gratitude; even as he died, his only wish was for his brother’s happiness. This experience caused Hannah to develop genuine feelings of love and devotion for both Luka and his brother, which is a very rare occurrence for a demon.
Her personality is quiet, reserved, and seemingly sorrowful. She rarely speaks, and her expression is often troubled or pained. She endures a great deal of mistreatment from Alois Trancy, including physical violence and humiliation, without showing anger or resentment. Rather than weakness, this passive endurance stems from her deep, almost maternal loyalty, born from her love for Luka and extended to Alois. She is patient, observant, and cunning, capable of great cruelty but also profound care. Unlike other demons who view humans only as meals, Hannah’s affection for Luka and Alois represents a genuine emotional attachment that defies her demonic nature.
In the story, Hannah’s primary role is as the steadfast, silent servant to Alois Trancy, often contrasted with his head butler, Claude Faustus. While Claude is coldly efficient and views Alois merely as a tool to obtain Ciel Phantomhive’s soul, Hannah is consistently loyal to Alois as a person. After Alois is killed by Claude and his soul is hidden inside Ciel Phantomhive’s body, Hannah works to restore him. She preserves Alois’s left eye by swallowing it and keeping it within her body. Later, she transfers this eye to her own empty socket, which allows her to communicate with and awaken Alois’s soul from within Ciel. She eventually forms a direct demonic contract with Alois, symbolized by a light blue, inverted pentagram appearing in her left eye. Her loyalty culminates in her fulfilling Alois’s final wish: to turn Ciel Phantomhive into a demon, ensuring that Sebastian Michaelis can never consume his soul.
Hannah possesses several notable abilities inherent to her demonic nature. Her most defining trait is that her body acts as a living sheath for the demonic sword Laevateinn, which can be drawn from her mouth, a process that visibly causes her pain. She has superhuman strength, speed, and resilience, and can survive injuries that would be fatal to a human or even a reaper. Beyond physical prowess, her body has the unique capacity to store objects inside itself, such as the demon sword or Alois’s eyeball. She also demonstrates the ability to absorb and contain souls, as she carries the soul of Luka within her throughout the series. In combat, she is proficient not only with her inherent demonic powers but also with human weaponry, including pistols and other firearms.
Hannah’s key relationships define her character arc. Her bond with Luka Macken is the foundation of her change from a detached demon to a loving one. Her relationship with Alois Trancy is central to the plot; it is a dynamic of cruelty from him and absolute, unshakeable devotion from her. She serves alongside the demonic triplet servants Thompson, Timber, and Canterbury, who are subordinate to her. Her relationship with Claude Faustus is one of shared employment but conflicting goals; she tolerates him to stay close to Alois but ultimately defies his plans. In the final moments of the series, as the floating island collapses, Hannah is last seen holding the dead Claude, with the souls of Alois and Luka within her, suggesting that her story concludes with her purpose fulfilled and her emotional journey complete.
