Description
Kazuichi Banjou is a male ghoul who first appears as the self-proclaimed leader of Tokyo's 11th Ward, though his authority in that role was tenuous and largely self-assumed following the departure of the powerful ghoul Rize Kamishiro. His early life was marked by difficult circumstances that left him with limited formal education, particularly struggling with reading and writing.

Physically, Banjou is a towering and stout individual, standing 187 centimeters tall and weighing 92 kilograms, with short reddish hair that contributes to his imposing presence. He was initially known for a distinctive beard shaped like the character "の", though later in the story this changes to a cross-shaped design. He is almost always accompanied by three loyal followers who wear gas masks: Ichimi, Jiro, and Sante.

Despite his intimidating size, Banjou possesses a genuinely pacifistic and compassionate nature. He is deeply loyal to those who show him kindness and has a strong sense of responsibility toward his subordinates. He dislikes risking lives and has a surprising fear of insects. His sincerity often leads him to act impulsively, but his fundamental kindness and empathy win the trust of those around him. Banjou is notably sensitive to the emotional states of others; he was perceptive enough to sense Ken Kaneki's growing mental instability and correctly predicted that Kaneki would eventually snap under the pressure.

Banjou's primary motivation throughout the story is his devotion to the people he cares about. He harbored a deep, unrequited admiration for Rize Kamishiro when she lived in the 11th Ward, fascinated by how she lived life on her own terms. He would often defend her in ward meetings and seek out her company, though she found him annoying and threatened to kill him if he followed her. Before leaving the ward, Rize sarcastically referred to him as the leader, a comment Banjou took seriously as a conferred duty, driving him to attempt to unify the ward's ghouls in her absence.

His role in the larger story begins when the ghoul organization Aogiri Tree, seeking Rize, conscripted him and ordered him to search for her in the 20th Ward. While questioning the staff at the coffee shop Anteiku, he noticed Rize's scent on Ken Kaneki and, assuming Kaneki was her boyfriend, attacked him. Kaneki accidentally knocked Banjou unconscious during the scuffle. When he awoke, he learned from Kaneki that Rize was no longer alive. Shortly after, he was attacked by Ayato Kirishima, and both he and Kaneki were captured and taken to Aogiri Tree's headquarters.

While captive, Banjou formed a plan to escape with Kaneki and his own followers, creating a small Anti-Aogiri faction. Their initial escape attempt failed when they were caught by the Bin brothers and the brutal ghoul Yamori. Banjou and his followers were taken prisoner while Kaneki was subjected to horrific torture. He and the other captives were eventually freed by a transformed Kaneki during the subsequent battle in the 11th Ward. In gratitude for his rescue, Banjou swore lifelong loyalty to Kaneki, offering to serve as his shield, fully aware that his combat abilities were poor and he could offer little in a direct fight.

Several key relationships define Banjou's journey. His bond with Ken Kaneki is central; what began as hostility transformed into deep respect and unwavering friendship. Even after a mentally unstable Kaneki critically injured him, Banjou immediately forgave him, reassuring Kaneki that he would always protect him. His relationship with his three followers is one of mutual loyalty and affection; they have followed him since their days in the 11th Ward, willingly risking their lives for him, though they are not above teasing him about his shortcomings.

He shares a warm, brotherly relationship with Hinami Fueguchi, who looks up to him. He affectionately calls her Hina-chan and later agrees to help infiltrate the CCG's Cochlea prison to rescue her. His relationship with Ayato Kirishima is more strained, rooted in the time Banjou was forced to serve under the younger ghoul in Aogiri Tree, where Ayato frequently beat and berated him. Years later, while their relationship remains tense, they are able to cooperate when necessary, such as during the Cochlea raid.

Banjou undergoes significant development over the course of the narrative. Initially portrayed as a somewhat ineffectual and weak leader, he grows into a more charismatic, intelligent, and capable figure. By the events of the sequel manga, after a time skip, he has successfully united the ghouls of the 6th Ward as their respected leader. He has also become more educated, able to read and evaluate complex novels, a stark contrast to his earlier struggles with literacy.

Regarding his notable abilities, Banjou is a Ukaku-type ghoul, a classification typically associated with speed and projectile attacks. However, his body type is unusual for this category, and for a long time, he was unable to properly manifest his kagune, his predatory organ. His true combat ability is extremely low, and he is largely a pacifist who avoids fighting. After a near-death experience, his kagune awakened with a unique property: instead of focusing on offense, his Ukaku kagune specializes in powerful and rapid healing. This ability allows him to regenerate from severe injuries that would be fatal to others and, remarkably, even heal other individuals. He later uses this power to heal Ayato Kirishima and the injured human CCG investigator Akira Mado, demonstrating a rare and valuable supportive capability among ghouls.
