Description
Rize Kamishiro, often referred to as the Binge Eater, is a ghoul whose actions set the entire story of Tokyo Ghoul in motion. Born as an illegitimate daughter of Tsuneyoshi Washuu, the former chairman of the CCG, she was intended by the Washuu clan to be used as a breeding vessel to preserve their bloodline. She escaped this fate as a child with the help of Kichimura Washuu, later known as Souta Washuu-Furuta, and was taken in by the powerful ghoul Matasaka Kamishiro, also called Shachi, who became her foster father. Under his care, she had access to books and developed a love for reading, but her insatiable appetite for human flesh grew uncontrollable. Her binge eating drew the attention of the CCG, leading to a raid that resulted in Shachi’s capture. After that, Rize lived a nomadic life, moving between wards and feeding indiscriminately, earning her nickname due to the threat she posed to both humans and other ghouls.
Rize’s personality is that of a classic femme fatale. She presents herself as a charming, gentle, and intellectual young woman to lure in unsuspecting victims, but beneath that mask lies a ruthless, sadistic predator. She is fiercely independent, hedonistic, and cares little for the consequences of her actions, often invading other ghouls’ territory purely to satisfy her hunger. Despite her cold exterior, she does possess deeper emotions. Her independence was hard-won through her escape from the Washuu clan, and she values her freedom above all else. When she is later reduced to a mindless, starved state after prolonged captivity, her fear and vulnerability surface, and she cries out for her foster father, revealing a fragile side that contrasts sharply with her earlier dominance.
Her primary motivation is the gratification of her instincts—her hunger and her love of violence. She lacks ambition beyond following her whims and indulging in her desires, often acting out of boredom. This lack of restraint makes her dangerous to everyone around her.
In the story, Rize’s role is that of a catalyst. She meets Ken Kaneki, a university student, at a café where they bond over their shared interest in books. She invites him on a date, but lures him to a secluded construction site and attempts to devour him. During the struggle, steel beams fall on her, seemingly killing her. This incident, later revealed to have been orchestrated by Furuta, leads to her being taken to Kanou General Hospital. There, Dr. Akihiro Kanou transplants her kakuhou—the organ that produces a ghoul’s kagune—into Kaneki, transforming him into the first artificial one-eyed ghoul. Rize is not actually dead; Kanou keeps her alive and uses her as a living donor for further experiments, creating other one-eyed ghouls such as the Yasuhisa twins and the Oggai.
Rize’s key relationships are defined by predation and exploitation. With Kaneki, she initially views him as prey, but his transformation means her kakuhou permanently ties their fates together, and Kaneki experiences hallucinations of her that represent his internal struggle with his ghoul instincts. Her foster father Shachi genuinely cared for her, and she later calls out for him in her distress. Akihiro Kanou sees her only as a resource, keeping her captive for years. Renji Yomo eventually rescues her from Kanou’s lab, but he keeps her restrained and starved to prevent her from becoming a threat, which further breaks her mind. She is later taken back by Shachi, but he is quickly defeated by Kishou Arima, and Rize falls into the hands of Furuta, who uses her as the core of the monstrous entity known as Dragon. In her final appearance, a revitalized version of her emerges from Dragon’s nucleus, and Ken Kaneki kills her, putting an end to her suffering.
Rize’s development traces a tragic arc from a confident, independent predator to a broken, tormented victim of experimentation, and finally to a mindless creature that is granted a merciful death. Throughout this, her character remains a symbol of the consequences of unchecked hunger and the loss of autonomy.
In terms of abilities, Rize possesses a rinkaku-type kagune, which manifests as multiple bright red, tentacle-like appendages emerging from her lower back. These are extremely sharp and can slice through both humans and ghouls with ease. Her kagune has exceptional regenerative properties, allowing her to recover quickly from non-fatal wounds. As a ghoul, she also has enhanced strength, speed, and durability, placing her among the most powerful ghouls in Tokyo. However, her regenerative abilities have limits; severe damage to vital organs, such as the crushing injury from the steel beams, can incapacitate her. In her later form as the core of Dragon, her appearance changes drastically, with long white hair and pale skin marked by patterns, reflecting her transformation into a monstrous being. Her ultimate death comes at Kaneki’s hands, closing the loop that began with her attack on him.
