Description
Kotaro Amon is a central character whose journey forms a crucial parallel to the main protagonist. Born on April 7, Amon stands 191 cm tall and possesses a tall, athletic, and muscular build, a testament to his rigorous training regimen. Orphaned at a young age, he was placed in a Catholic orphanage run by a priest named Donato Porpora, whom he came to see as a foster father. This semblance of a peaceful childhood was shattered when Amon secretly witnessed Donato, who was in fact a ghoul, butchering a child who had supposedly been adopted. Though Donato spared Amon's life, this traumatic discovery instilled in him a profound and deep-seated hatred for ghouls, whom he came to believe were the sole source of corruption in the world. To atone for his silence and his connection to the monster who raised him, he constantly wears a silver cross necklace, a symbol of his repentance.

Driven by this conviction, Amon joined the Commission of Counter Ghoul and graduated at the top of his class from the Ghoul Investigator Training Academy. He was first partnered with the eccentric and ruthless Special Class Investigator Kureo Mado, whom he deeply respected as a mentor. In this role, Amon was a zealous and uncompromising enforcer of CCG justice, willing to go to extreme lengths, such as desecrating a grave, to secure evidence against his targets. His early worldview was morally absolute, seeing all ghouls as irredeemable monsters. However, this rigid perspective began to fracture after his first confrontation with Ken Kaneki, a one-eyed ghoul. Despite having the advantage, Amon was defeated, and Kaneki chose to spare his life, an act of mercy that challenged everything he believed about ghouls and left him deeply confused and seeking answers.

Amon's personality is defined by a strong, almost unyielding sense of justice, loyalty, and a deep-seated sense of responsibility. He is a hardworking and sincere individual, prone to blaming himself for the deaths of his comrades, particularly his mentor, Kureo Mado. The guilt over Mado's death drove him to obsession, but his encounters with Kaneki slowly forced him to confront the nuances of a world he had painted in black and white. He begins to question whether his crusade is truly righteous, and he develops a unique curiosity about Kaneki, wanting to understand the nature of a ghoul who would show mercy. His key relationships reflect this internal conflict. He shares a complex and strained bond with Akira Mado, his mentor's daughter who initially blames him for her father's death but whose partnership eventually grows into one of deep mutual trust and unspoken romantic feelings from her side. He is a protective superior to investigators like Seido Takizawa and is wary yet respectful of his former academy instructor, Yukinori Shinohara.

Amon's role in the story is that of a primary antagonist who slowly evolves into a tragic counterpart to Kaneki. While Kaneki is a human turned ghoul, Amon represents the human perspective, a champion of the CCG whose convictions are steadily eroded by his interactions with the very creatures he is sworn to destroy. In the climactic Anteiku Raid, he faces Kaneki one final time. Their brutal battle results in Amon losing an arm but also inflicting grievous wounds on Kaneki. Severely injured and left for dead after confronting the Aogiri Tree executives Tatara and Noro, he was officially declared killed in action and posthumously promoted to Special Class Investigator.

However, Amon did not die. He was captured by Aogiri Tree and subjected to experiments by Dr. Akihiro Kanou, being transformed into an artificial one-eyed ghoul, a bitter irony given his past hatred. He reappears in the sequel, Tokyo Ghoul:re, now a hooded figure with a kagune manifesting from his right arm. As a ghoul, he is forced to experience the world from the perspective he once despised, grappling with intense guilt, self-loathing, and a new understanding of the suffering he once inflicted. His development culminates in a confrontation with his former foster father, Donato, finally confronting the root of his trauma. He eventually aligns with Kaneki, fighting not for the extermination of ghouls or humans, but for a fragile hope of coexistence and to dismantle the corrupt systems that perpetuate their conflict.

As a ghoul investigator, Amon was known for his immense physical strength, which allowed him to wield heavy koukaku-type quinques like Doujima. After his transformation into an artificial one-eyed ghoul, his abilities changed drastically. He possesses an ukaku-type kagune, which is suited for high-speed attacks, and he further evolved into a kakuja, a more powerful and monstrous form. As a ghoul, he gained superhuman strength capable of crushing other kagunes with his bare hands, incredible regenerative abilities, and the unique power to detach parts of his kagune to repair or supplement his damaged quinque, Doujima. This transformation from a celebrated ghoul investigator into a being he once swore to destroy makes his story a profound exploration of guilt, redemption, and the blurred line between monster and man.
