Description
Lubbock is a young man with shoulder-length green hair that covers his left eye, green eyes, and red goggles often perched on top of his head. He wears a long green jacket with a fur‑trimmed hood over a white and red ringer shirt, blue jeans, and brown shoes. He was born into a wealthy merchant family, but his life changed when he met Najenda. He fell in love with her at first sight and abandoned his comfortable life to join the Imperial Army solely to be near her. When Najenda defected to form the rebel assassin group Night Raid, Lubbock followed without hesitation, demonstrating unwavering loyalty.
His personality is easy‑going and often perverted, frequently attempting to peep on female comrades such as Leone. However, he keeps this behavior from interfering with combat, remaining focused during fights. Beneath this flirtatious exterior lies a crafty, resourceful, and highly reliable individual. His unassuming demeanor allows him to blend into the background, making him an effective spy and assassin. He is playful and optimistic even in battle, often teasing opponents and boasting about his abilities, yet he is aware of his limitations and knows when to retreat. His primary motivations are his romantic infatuation with Najenda and a strong sense of justice against the oppressive Empire. His loyalty to Night Raid is absolute; even under torture he refuses to betray his comrades, claiming his love for Najenda helps him endure pain.
Within Night Raid, Lubbock serves as a tactician and a versatile fighter. His Teigu is Infinite Uses: Cross Tail, a set of gloves that manipulate incredibly strong, invisible wires. With these wires he can create shields, armor, and weapons such as axes or spears; set traps; track enemies by forming a perimeter; strangle foes from a distance; and cushion falls. He is highly creative in applying his ability and claims to have gotten many ideas from the manga sold at a bookstore he owns. He is also skilled at faking death, which he calls his ultimate technique, often using it to ambush or escape opponents. Despite relying on tricks, he is proficient in hand‑to‑hand combat, as shown when he dismantles an Empire guard.
His relationship with Najenda is central to his character arc; his affection for her drives much of his actions. This leads to a playful rivalry with Susanoo, whom he views as a competitor for her attention. He forms a strong friendship with Tatsumi, the newest member of Night Raid, and the two bond during missions; Tatsumi grieves deeply at Lubbock’s eventual death. He also works closely with other members such as Akame and Mine.
Lubbock’s character develops significantly over the course of the narrative. Initially introduced as comic relief with his perverse antics, his depth becomes apparent during major conflicts. He demonstrates tactical acumen by single‑handedly defeating two of the Four Rakshasa Demons, elite fighters known for killing Teigu users. Later, during an investigation of the Wild Hunt, he is captured by Syura, the Prime Minister’s son, and subjected to horrific torture. He maintains his loyalty and eventually kills Syura by snapping his neck with a hidden thread. His final act is a selfless sacrifice while attempting to escape the imperial palace, reaffirming his commitment to the rebellion and his comrades.
Key abilities include the versatile use of Cross Tail wires for detection, defense, offense, and mobility. He can form temporary armor, weave shields, lacerate or impale enemies, and even manipulate objects. His combat style emphasizes creativity and adaptability, planning several moves ahead. His physical combat limitations mean he prefers distance fighting, but he can hold his own in close quarters. As a strategist, he is adept at tricking enemies and adapting to changing situations.
