Description
General Liver is a character from the Japanese anime and manga series Akame ga Kill!. He serves as the leader of the Three Beasts, an elite unit of three Teigu users who act as the personal bodyguards for the series' primary antagonist, General Esdeath.
Before the events of the series, Liver was once a highly respected and accomplished general in the Empire's army and was the direct superior to Bulat, who would later become a member of the Night Raid assassin group. During the Empire's war against the Southern Lands, Liver faced a downfall that reshaped his entire life. He was a man of principle who refused to bow to the corruption of the Prime Minister Honest, specifically rejecting offers to take bribes. In retaliation for his integrity, the Prime Minister had him framed on false charges of treason. At his subsequent military tribunal, Liver attempted to defend his honor by citing his long record of service and merits, but his pleas were ignored by the corrupt officials. He was stripped of his post and left to rot in a prison cell for the rest of his life.
His fate changed dramatically when he was visited in prison by Esdeath. Recognizing his formidable abilities and deeming it a waste to let him perish in obscurity, she freed him on the sole condition that he would join her forces. She also offered him her patronage, which served as protection from the Prime Minister and his political enemies. This act of salvation created an unshakable debt of gratitude in Liver. He became forever devoted to Esdeath, pledging his life to her service and becoming the leader of her most loyal soldiers, the Three Beasts.
Liver's personality is a study in contrasts, defined by his past honor and his present servitude. He was once an upright and responsible general who cared for the lives of his men, a fact that his former subordinate Bulat confirms by remembering him as a great superior. However, after falling under Esdeath's influence, a darker and more ruthless side emerged. While he retains a strong, deep-seated hatred for the corrupt politicians who wronged him, he became fiercely and unquestioningly loyal to Esdeath. He follows her orders absolutely, regardless of the personal cost, even when it means fighting an old friend or using suicidal tactics. He also appears to have adopted a more sadistic disposition, showing no revulsion at the gruesome acts of his comrades and finding pleasure in the violent conquests carried out under Esdeath's command.
The core of Liver's role in the story is his tragic confrontation with his former protégé, Bulat. Their paths cross again years later on the luxury cruise ship Ryussen. Bulat, now a member of the Revolutionary Army's Night Raid, stands in direct opposition to Liver, who is on a mission to eliminate him. Their reunion is a clash not just of weapons, but of ideals and divergent life choices. Liver attempts to persuade Bulat to return to the Empire and join Esdeath's ranks, wishing to be comrades in arms once more. Bulat coldly rejects the offer, stating he cannot abandon his duty to the people. As the last two combatants standing, they engage in a final, brutal duel that goes beyond the use of their Teigu, devolving into a pure sword fight. Desperate to fulfill his mission and prove his loyalty, Liver resorts to injecting himself with a powerful performance-enhancing drug. However, even this fails to give him the edge he needs, and Bulat lands a fatal blow. In his dying act, Liver uses his Teigu, the Black Marlin, to manipulate his own blood, turning it into poisonous projectiles that fly toward Bulat. His final gambit succeeds, as the poison ensures that both men will die from their wounds, granting Liver a posthumous victory for his master. In his last moments, Liver's lingering respect for his old friend is evident, with both men acknowledging that in another life, they would have shared a drink in celebration.
Liver undergoes minimal personal development in the series, as his transformation from a principled general to a fanatical follower occurs in his backstory. His narrative arc is not about change, but about the tragic culmination of the choice he made when he accepted Esdeath's offer. His story serves as a dark mirror to what could happen to other characters who prioritize power and loyalty over their own moral compass. He is defined by his gratitude, showing that even the noblest of intentions can be twisted into a tool for tyranny.
In terms of abilities, Liver is a highly skilled and battle-hardened warrior. His primary asset in combat is his own Teigu, a ring known as the Black Marlin. This Imperial Arm gives him the power to manipulate water and other liquids at will. He demonstrates great mastery over this ability, creating powerful torrents and shaping liquid into weapons. His most notable technique is his Teigu's trump card, which allows him to shape his own blood into sharp, high-speed blades. As shown in his final fight, he can also use a drug that both enhances his physical strength and turns his blood into a deadly poison, making even a scratch from his blood blades fatal. Despite his formidable skills, he is ultimately defeated by Bulat after the latter breaks his sword. Outside of combat, an interesting but minor trait is that Liver enjoys cooking for his comrades as a form of celebration, though his culinary skills are notoriously and lethally terrible. His cooking is said to be as dangerous as an average Teigu, having once incapacitated even the powerful General Esdeath for a short period.
