Description
Liver is an antagonist in Akame ga KILL! and serves as the leader of the Three Beasts, the elite personal bodyguard unit directly under General Esdeath. His background begins with a career as an accomplished general in the Empire's army, where he served with integrity and principle. During a campaign in the Southern Lands, he refused to accept bribes from the corrupt Prime Minister Honest. As a result, he was framed on false charges, dishonorably discharged, and sentenced to life in prison. While awaiting his fate, Esdeath visited him, recognized his military value, and offered him freedom on the condition that he join her forces. Grateful for this second chance, Liver became fiercely loyal to her and assumed command of her most trusted soldiers.
In terms of personality, Liver is described as a refined and battle-hardened man. Before his imprisonment, he was a caring commander who valued the lives of his troops. Following his recruitment by Esdeath, he undergoes a marked transformation, becoming increasingly sadistic and merciless. He comes to revel in the violence his new commander orchestrates, yet his loyalty remains absolute. His motivations are driven primarily by gratitude and a sense of indebtedness, which ultimately supersede his former moral compass.
His role in the story is that of a formidable adversary to Night Raid. He is the strongest member of the Three Beasts and serves as Esdeath's right hand. His most significant narrative moment occurs during the confrontation on the cruise ship Ryussen, where he meets Bulat, a former subordinate from his days as an imperial general. Their battle is a clash of divergent paths and ideals, and it culminates in a fight to the death.
Key relationships include his bond with Esdeath, whom he views as a savior and commander, and his past connection to Bulat. He also works alongside his fellow Three Beasts, Daidara and Nyau, as a cohesive unit. His development is primarily a descent from a principled general into a ruthless enforcer, shaped by betrayal and a new, violent purpose.
Notable abilities include his leadership and combat experience as a former imperial general. He wields a Teigu called Black Marlin, which takes the form of a ring and grants him the power to manipulate any substance in a liquid state. He is also highly resistant to poisons and proves himself a skilled swordsman.
