Movie
Description
Junpei Iori is a second-year student at Gekkoukan High School and a core member of the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad, known as SEES. He is a classmate of both the protagonist and Yukari Takeba. Junpei is a young man of average height with a lanky build, sporting a distinctive goatee and a closely buzzed haircut, which is typical for a baseball player even though he does not play on the school team. He is almost never seen without his signature backward baseball cap and wears a dark blue dress shirt under his school uniform instead of the standard white.

Junpei's outward personality is that of a goofy, upbeat, and somewhat perverted class clown. He often tries to act as the mood-maker of the group, cracking jokes and making boastful comments, particularly about his skills with women, though his attempts at flirtation are almost always unsuccessful. This cheerful and sometimes annoying exterior, which leads Yukari to nickname him Stupei for his poor decisions and academic performance, serves as a mask for deep-seated insecurities. Beneath the surface, Junpei struggles with a profound lack of self-worth. He comes from a troubled home with an alcoholic father, a situation he resents and from which he is glad to escape by moving into the SEES dormitory. Because of this upbringing, he rarely shows his true feelings to his friends, using humor and bravado to hide his jealousy and inferiority complex, particularly towards the protagonist.

His primary motivation for joining SEES is a selfish one: he craves recognition and wants to feel like a hero. Fighting during the Dark Hour makes him feel important and gives him a sense of purpose that is otherwise missing from his life, especially since he neglects his studies and sees combat as the one area where he can excel. This desire for glory leads to a deep-seated jealousy of the protagonist, who possesses the unique Wild Card ability and is quickly appointed as the field leader of SEES. In the events of Spring of Birth, this resentment manifests as competitive outbursts and recklessness, as Junpei constantly tries to prove himself and becomes frustrated when he is not in the spotlight.

Junpei's role within SEES is that of a frontline fighter. He is energetic and eager to engage in battle, often acting before thinking things through. He wields a two-handed sword, which he swings more like a baseball bat due to his lack of formal combat training, a reflection of his love for the sport. His initial Persona is Hermes, which is associated with the Magician Arcana. In battle, his Persona specializes in powerful physical attacks and party buffs, and it can also cast weak fire magic, though his magical ability is not as strong as his physical prowess.

His key relationships within SEES are complex. He shares a contentious but friendly rivalry with Yukari Takeba, who frequently criticizes his immaturity. His most significant relationship is with the silent protagonist, whom he both befriends and envies. Junpei sees the protagonist as a rival, and his jealousy over the protagonist's natural talent and leadership role is a central source of conflict in his early character arc. Outside of SEES, his tragic relationship with Chidori Yoshino, a member of the antagonistic Strega group, becomes the catalyst for his eventual maturity, although this occurs in later films beyond Spring of Birth.

The first movie, Spring of Birth, establishes Junpei at his most immature and insecure. It shows his initial discovery of his Persona abilities after being found crying during the Dark Hour by Akihiko Sanada, and his swift decision to join SEES and move into the dorm. His development throughout the film primarily involves his struggle to accept his role within the group and deal with his jealousy, setting the stage for the significant personal growth he experiences later in the series.
