Description
Bernhard von Schneider acts as primary adjutant and close confidant to High Admiral Willibald Joachim von Merkatz. His documented service begins at the Battle of Astarte in 796 UC, where he serves as a lieutenant under Merkatz's command.
During the Imperial Civil War, Schneider remains steadfastly loyal to Merkatz within the Lippstadt League opposing Reinhard von Lohengramm. After the League's defeat, he intervenes decisively to prevent Merkatz's suicide by deceptively removing ammunition from the admiral's sidearm, then convinces him to seek asylum with the Free Planets Alliance at Iserlohn Fortress. Schneider successfully negotiates Yang Wen-li's acceptance of Merkatz as an honored guest, securing treatment appropriate to the admiral's rank.
Relocating to Iserlohn, Schneider continues advising Merkatz and participates in critical engagements, including the defense against the Geiersburg Fortress assault. Upon formation of the Galactic Empire Legitimate Government in exile on Heinessen in 798 UC, both Schneider and Merkatz are incorporated without consultation. Merkatz becomes Minister of Military Affairs, while Schneider is promoted to Commander. Privately, Schneider voices skepticism about the government-in-exile's viability, noting its lack of military forces and characterizing Merkatz's title as hollow.
This short-lived Legitimate Government military consists solely of seven personnel: Schneider, Merkatz, and five enlisted members. Schneider departs Heinessen with Merkatz in February 799 UC to rejoin the conflict against Lohengramm's forces. Following the Alliance's surrender, he assists Merkatz in establishing a resistance cell at the Dayan Khan asteroid supply base. Their fleet grows through targeted raids, capturing 464 battleships and 80 carriers from an Alliance decommissioning operation in July 799 UC.
Schneider participates in the reclaiming of Iserlohn Fortress and stands beside Merkatz through subsequent campaigns. At the Battle of Shiva, he witnesses the destruction of the flagship Hyperion and receives Merkatz's final words after the admiral sustains mortal wounds from Bittenfeld's Black Lancers. After the ceasefire, Schneider receives an imperial pardon. He informs Julian Mintz of his intent to return Merkatz's remains to the admiral's family in the Empire, fulfilling his final duty.
