Description
Bernhard von Schneider acted as principal adjutant and trusted confidant to High Admiral Willibald Joachim von Merkatz. His service began no later than the Battle of Astarte in January 796 UC, where he held the rank of lieutenant. Schneider's unwavering loyalty resided solely with Merkatz, persisting through the Alliance–Imperial War, the Imperial Civil War, and later clashes between the New Galactic Empire and Iserlohn Republic.
Within the Lippstadt League during the Imperial Civil War, Schneider supported Merkatz against Reinhard von Lohengramm. He stood by Merkatz at Geiersburg Fortress and fought in engagements including the Battle of Schann-tau. When the war concluded, Schneider intervened decisively to prevent Merkatz’s suicide by declaring the admiral’s sidearm unloaded. He then persuaded Merkatz to seek asylum in the Free Planets Alliance at Iserlohn Fortress under Yang Wen-li. Schneider successfully negotiated Merkatz’s honorable treatment, securing his status as a respected guest despite their past enmity.
Following their defection, Schneider and Merkatz joined the Iserlohn Garrison Fleet, advising Yang Wen-li and occasionally commanding fleet operations. Schneider participated in critical battles like the defense against Admiral Kempff’s mobilized Geiersburg Fortress. After the formation of the Galactic Empire Legitimate Government in 798 UC, Schneider entered its military structure as Merkatz became Minister of Military Affairs. Schneider openly expressed skepticism about the government-in-exile’s viability, noting its lack of troops and labeling Merkatz’s title an "empty" honor. He attained the rank of commander during this period.
In February 799 UC, Schneider departed with Merkatz and minimal personnel to engage Lohengramm’s forces, participating in supply line raids and the Battle of Vermillion. Following the Free Planets Alliance’s surrender, they established a resistance cell based at the Dayan Khan asteroid supply base. Schneider played a key role in expanding their fleet, spearheading a raid in July 799 UC that captured 464 battleships and 80 carriers from decommissioning Alliance forces, an action which also spurred defections to their cause.
Schneider later returned to Iserlohn after its recapture by Yang’s forces. He continued serving Merkatz until the Battle of Shiva in 801 UC, where the flagship *Hyperion* was crippled by Admiral Bittenfeld’s fleet. As the ship faced destruction and Merkatz sustained mortal wounds, the admiral delivered his final words to Schneider on the bridge. After the ceasefire, Schneider received an Imperial pardon and arranged to return Merkatz’s remains to his family in the Empire, fulfilling his final duty.
Schneider’s rank progressed from lieutenant at Astarte to lieutenant commander during the Lippstadt Conspiracy, culminating as a commander under the Legitimate Government. His consistent role centered on providing strategic counsel and operational support to Merkatz across all military and political transitions.
