Description
Iwato Namito is a second-year student at Kukunochi Academy who serves as one of the main protagonists in the story. He is a childhood friend of Akashi Saginuma, with whom he shares a long history, and is among the select group of students chosen by the covert organization IX to become a pilot for the Gargouille squad, tasked with exploring the Lightless Realm and combating the supernatural entities known as Admonitions or Imashime. His past includes being one of the rare survivors of the mysterious Kamikakushi incident, an event that left a lasting, complex mark beneath his otherwise easygoing exterior.
In terms of appearance, Iwato has brown hair and gray eyes, and he is sometimes seen wearing a red headband. His personality stands in contrast to the grim and serious tone of the series; he is characterized as cheerful, warm-hearted, and naturally sociable. While he can come across as someone who jokes around, he possesses a deeply loyal and protective nature, especially toward his friends and fellow pilots. He often acts as an emotionally grounding presence for his team, showing a consistent willingness to look out for those around him even when burdened by his own struggles. Following a difficult mission where the group learns of the death of their comrade Emiru Hazaki, Iwato is shown dealing with his own sadness while still being attentive to the needs of others, such as helping a grieving Raika Kasumi by sparring with her and showing concern for Maamu Yuzuki.
Iwato's role in the story is largely defined by his relationships and his function as a pilot. He is best synchronized with Raika Kasumi, and the two are frequently seen partnering together during missions and training exercises, such as the deserted island survival test. His most significant relationship is with the protagonist, Akashi Saginuma. As Akashi's best friend, Iwato is his most trusted companion, and the two have a history of friendly rivalry, having previously sparred against one another in their Vess mecha, with Akashi piloting a blue unit and Iwato a red unit. He is also a designated pilot in the special investigation unit, operating his Vess to protect the base and fight against the Admonitions, especially as the mysteries surrounding the Lightless Realm and the nature of the pilots themselves begin to surface.
Development in Iwato's character is tied to the escalating conflicts and revelations about the Lightless Realm. As the story progresses and the whereabouts of Akashi become unknown, Iwato and the remaining students learn they are known as the children spirited away, forcing them to confront the true reasons they were gathered together. His personal growth is shown through his persistent efforts to support his teammates, fighting to protect the place that Akashi and the others can return to, and maturing from a simple student into a more resilient and dependable member of the team. As a pilot, his notable ability is his high synchronization rate with Raika, making them an effective combat pair. He pilots a red Vess Tower, a type of mecha used to fight the Admonitions, which are metallic crystalline entities formed from the remains of humans who died within the Lightless Realm.
