Description
Akashi Saginuma is the main protagonist of the story. He is a thin young male with dark hair and eyes and fair skin, who stands out at Kukunochi Academy for his exceptional piloting skills. His life was profoundly shaped by a traumatic childhood: his parents died when he was young, leaving his older brother, Aoshi, to protect him. This loss left Akashi emotionally crippled, and he grew up believing that it should have been him who died rather than his parents, harboring complicated feelings towards his brother for surviving.

In his daily life, Akashi presents as a sullen, cold, and disaffected individual who is difficult to like at first glance. He is emotionally crippled by the death of his family and has a reserved and introspective nature, preferring to keep others at a distance. However, as the story progresses, he begins to show sincerity and a more vulnerable side, revealing that his cold exterior masks deep-seated pain and a struggle to connect with others. His personality is defined by a strong sense of duty, but this is often complicated by a fundamental inability to understand the feelings of those around him, leading his well-intentioned actions to be perceived as selfish or misguided.

Akashi’s primary motivation stems from his desire to protect others and to atone for past sins, particularly those connected to a forgotten incident from his childhood in the Lightless Realm. This drive is most powerfully focused on Sasame Izuriha, a fellow pilot who he is drawn to after seeing her sing. He develops deep romantic feelings for her, and his determination to save her from turning into Necrometal and to defeat the Corpse becomes a central driving force for his actions throughout the series. He is willing to repeatedly risk his life by entering the dangerous Lightless Realm to achieve this goal.

Within the story, Akashi is a key member of Team Gargouille and a pilot for the organization IX. His role is not just as a pilot but as the central figure around which the plot revolves, with his personal history and connections to the other characters being the key to unraveling the mysteries of the Lightless Realm. He is chosen to pilot a special MA-Vess known as the Reaper, a task for which he is uniquely suited as he is the only one in the group who can control it.

His relationships are complex and often fraught with tension. His bond with Sasame is the most significant, providing him with his first experience of emotional warmth and connection, and their relationship grows increasingly intimate as the series progresses. In contrast, he is wary of Tsugumi, another female pilot who is in love with him, due to her hidden agendas. Emiru, another teammate, has a crush on him, and Akashi is later filled with regret for not recognizing the emotional turmoil she was going through before it was too late. His relationship with his older brother, Aoshi, is particularly tragic. Aoshi was one of the first MA-Vess pilots and eventually became Necrometal, transforming into the LIM system that Akashi pilots. Akashi initially harbors a deep resentment towards his brother, wishing him dead, but he later comes to understand the suffering Aoshi endured.

Throughout the series, Akashi undergoes significant development. Initially an emotionally stunted and isolated individual, he is forced to confront his past and his own flaws as he links with his brother’s memories and interacts with the other pilots. His journey is one of learning to understand others, even as he repeatedly fails to do so perfectly. He starts as a reluctant hero driven by guilt but grows into a more decisive figure who is determined to face the Corpse and seek salvation for Sasame, ultimately learning to bear the weight of his "original sin" and fight for a future. In terms of abilities, Akashi is an exceptionally skilled MA-Vess pilot, considered the best at his academy. His unique and most notable ability is his capacity to control the powerful but dangerous Reaper, a feat that no one else in the group can accomplish. He also possesses a unique sensitivity to the Lightless Realm, allowing him to sense the approach of darkness and see spirits without fear.
