Description
Isaac Ray Pelham Westcott is the managing director of Deus Ex Machina Industries, commonly known as DEM, and serves as a primary antagonist in the story. He is a tall man with a pale complexion, dark ash blond hair, and sharp, narrow eyes that are often described as giving off a lifeless and unsettling impression. While he physically appears to be in his early thirties, this is deceptive, as his actual age is estimated to be around fifty; he has maintained this youthful appearance for decades without any known medical explanation, adding to his mysterious and feared reputation.
Westcott's personality is defined by a profound and chilling abnormality. From childhood, he exhibited a morbid fascination with death and suffering, feeling a strange sense of delight at his mother's funeral and pleasure from the sorrow of others. This inherent sadism was initially suppressed to maintain social acceptance within his hometown. However, the destruction of his village of natural mages by fearful ordinary humans eliminated these social restraints. He is a cold-blooded individual who feels no guilt or remorse, viewing any sacrifice, including the lives of his subordinates, as insignificant in the pursuit of his goals. He is also a consummate manipulator, capable of wearing a charming mask while orchestrating cruel schemes to induce despair in others, a method he uses to force Spirits into their Inverse Forms.
Westcott's public motivation is revenge against humanity for the massacre of his people. Alongside his childhood friends Elliot Baldwin Woodman, Ellen Mira Mathers, and Karen Nora Mathers, he survived the destruction of their village. This event drove them to create a ritual known as the Spirit Formula, which gathered the world's mana to artificially create the First Spirit, an act that also caused the catastrophic Great Eurasian Spacequake that killed millions. However, Westcott's true nature goes deeper than revenge. Privately, he thanked those who destroyed his village for giving him an excuse to act on his twisted desires without restraint. His ultimate goal is the obliteration of the current human race and the creation of a new world, a vision he pursues with meticulous, patient scheming rather than reckless impulse.
Within the story, Westcott is the head of DEM, a global military corporation that develops Realizer technology and CR-Units to combat Spirits. He is responsible for many of the central conflicts, including orchestrating the capture of Spirits like Nia Honjo to harvest their powers and manipulating events to push Tohka Yatogami into her Inverse state. His key relationships are defined by his goals. He is protected by his supremely loyal secretary, Ellen Mira Mathers, the world's strongest Wizard, who has served him since childhood. In contrast, his former friend Elliot Woodman abandoned their shared vision to form the rival organization Ratatoskr, dedicated to protecting Spirits, making him Westcott's direct ideological opponent. Westcott also develops a deep interest in Shido Itsuka, the protagonist who can seal Spirit powers, correctly identifying Shido as a threat and a tool to cause emotional despair among Spirits. Notably, Westcott is revealed to be responsible for shooting and killing Shido in a previous timeline, an act that solidified their enmity.
Westcott's character development is marked by his transition from a behind-the-scenes strategist to a god-like final boss. For most of the series, he relies on his intellect, influence, and powerful subordinates like Ellen. His plans involve capturing Spirits and subjecting them to brutal experiments to extract Qlipha Crystals, which allow him to gain the abilities of their Demon Kings. His first major success is absorbing a crystal from the Spirit Nia Honjo, granting him the incomplete Demon King Beelzebub. Beelzebub takes the form of a book and provides him with near-limitless knowledge absorption, information transfer, the ability to trap enemies in fabricated worlds, and the power to summon paper-like soldiers known as Nibelcole. Later, by replicating the Spirit Formula on himself, Westcott transcends humanity to become the Second Spirit of Origin, gaining command of three Demon Kings: Athiel, Belial, and Qemetiel, which grant him abilities like instantaneous death, reality distortion, and existence erasure. Despite attaining godlike power, his final confrontation ends in mutual destruction with the First Spirit, which he had created decades prior.
