Description
Hiiyo Ikusaba is a significant character in the narrative, serving as the primary antagonist and the former vice-president of the first-generation Adventure Club on Nanae Island. His background is deeply intertwined with the history of the club and the very room where the protagonist, Jugo, comes to live. Before Jugo, Hiiyo was the resident of Room 202, the apartment also inhabited by the ghost girl Nanana. Unlike Jugo, Hiiyo rarely stayed in the room and often left Nanana alone, a pattern of behavior that contributed to his eventual eviction. He also notably refuses to pay his back rent, a small but persistent character detail that reflects his broader disregard for rules and obligations.
Hiiyo is characterized by a ruthless and pragmatic philosophy, believing that might makes right. He is a realist who does not shy away from using threats, brute force, or even sacrificing others to achieve his goals, particularly when it comes to obtaining powerful items known as Nanana Collections. This cold, results-driven approach is exemplified by an incident during his time leading the second-generation Adventure Club, where he used a female club member as a disposable pawn to secure a treasure, an act that left the member physically crippled and led to the club's near dissolution. His actions create a sharp contrast with the more cooperative spirit of the current Adventure Club. However, deeper analysis reveals a slightly more complex nature; his harsh actions are not purely malicious, as he once used severe measures against a member who was discovered to be a spy, and he tends to avoid unnecessary violence and keeps his promises, acting more like a performative villain than a truly evil one.
Motivated by the acquisition of the Nanana Collections for his own purposes, Hiiyo comes into direct conflict with the present-day Adventure Club. His role in the story is primarily that of an obstacle and a rival treasure hunter. He re-enters the lives of the main characters by threatening Saki Yoshino, a girl who possesses a clue to a valuable treasure. This act forces the new Adventure Club to confront him inside a treasure room at Southred Mall, leading to a major physical and psychological showdown. Although he initially holds his own against the group, he is eventually forced to flee and is later captured by members of the Matsuri organization.
His relationship with other key characters is defined by conflict and history. He has a tense and antagonistic relationship with Isshin Yuiga, the current president of the Adventure Club, who despises Hiiyo for his methods and the damage he caused to the club they both once belonged to. His relationship with Nanana is also poor; she is visibly distressed and shaking upon his sudden visit, indicating a past marked by his neglect and self-serving attitude. Later in the story, he is shown to have a complex alliance with Tenso's older sister, Kanata Ichijo, cooperating with her in a plan that involves a high-difficulty Ruin, from which he ultimately obtains a powerful phantom beast-type Collection called Chronos.
Hiiyo is a formidable opponent due to his proficiency in an ancient martial art similar to Aikido and his possession of several potent items from Nanana's Collection. His three known Collections are a bell that can summon clouds and rain, a pair of shoes called Shadow Skimmer that allow him to dive into and move through shadows, and a ring known as Shinigami no Sasayaki which can issue powerful mental commands to others. He primarily relies on the shoes and the ring during his confrontations, using them to gain a tactical advantage in battle. Despite his antagonistic role, his character undergoes minor development, revealing that his actions are sometimes misunderstood and driven by logic rather than pure villainy, and he meets his match in the series' final conflict, showcasing that his brand of pragmatism has limits against the combined efforts of the protagonists.
