Description
Meme Tatane is a freshman meister attending the Death Weapon Meister Academy, known as Shibusen, and one of three protagonists in the Soul Eater spin-off series Soul Eater Not!. Her role in the story is as a candidate to become the official meister partner of the demon weapon Tsugumi Harudori, alongside her friend Anya Hepburn.
Before enrolling at Shibusen, Meme was an excellent student who held junior titles in multiple martial arts disciplines, including Karate and Judo. However, this background caught the attention of witches, and she was eventually subjected to powerful brainwashing methods by the witch Shaula Gorgon. This brainwashing caused her to become forgetful and spacey, and it placed her at the academy as an unknowingly possessed spy for Shaula and the Witch Order.
Her most notable personality trait is her extreme forgetfulness. She often forgets things, including the passage of time, and even her own name on occasion. She also frequently mispronounces the names of people around her, though she retains the names of those she is very close to, such as Tsugumi and Anya. Meme is a heavy sleeper who often sleepwalks and can even engage in hand-to-hand combat while partially unconscious. Despite her air-headed appearance, she is very understanding, kind, polite, and modest. She cares deeply for her friends, whom she calls her Funes, and has stated she can never forgive anyone who would lay a hand on them. She takes most situations in stride and is not easily frightened, which she attributes to her forgetfulness, but becomes serious and protective when her friends are in danger.
Meme's primary motivations stem from her friendships. She is a loyal and supportive companion to Tsugumi and Anya, and she is willing to make compromises for their happiness, such as agreeing to let Anya be Tsugumi's partner when Anya expresses a desire to do so. Her actions are never malicious, and she is driven by a desire to protect those close to her. Throughout the series, as she grows closer to her friends, she begins to break free from the control of Shaula Gorgon, revealing her true, capable self.
In combat, Meme is a skilled fighter. She possesses great physical strength, a good sense of balance, and impressive stamina. Her signature ability is the Sleeping Fist, a martial art she can only perform while sleeping or partially unconscious. In this state, she is a formidable opponent, capable of pushing aside powerful enemies. When awake and wielding her partner Tsugumi, who transforms into a halberd, Meme's fighting style focuses on strength, making heavy use of the weapon's axe portion. As the series progresses, she is also shown to be connected to the identity of Texas Mask, a wanted criminal who wields a chainsaw, and she demonstrates the ability to use such a weapon. Her physical prowess and combat skills make her arguably the strongest of the three main protagonists.
