TV-Series
Description
Akane Hoshi is a meister and a student at the Death Weapon Meister Academy, though his official standing is more complex than it first appears. He is a major supporting character in the narrative, introduced as a member of the Normally Overcome Target class, which is designed for students who do not seek combat roles. However, it is later revealed that he is secretly a member of the Especially Advantaged Talent class, the academy's advanced program for gifted fighters, and is on an undercover assignment.

In terms of background, Akane hails from the Hoshi family, which is the main house of a clan known for its martial arts. The Star Clan, from which the character Black Star descends, is a branch family of Akane's lineage. This heritage is physically marked by a star-shaped pupil in his left eye, which he typically conceals with his hair and glasses to soften his glare. His family's dojo continues to teach ancient, lethal martial arts techniques, a tradition from which Akane seeks to find a more constructive application by using his skills to protect people rather than letting them go to waste.

Akane's personality is defined by a reserved, courteous, and formal demeanor. He is often seen smiling and is sociable when the situation calls for it, but he maintains a respectful distance from others, even addressing close acquaintances by their surnames. His partner, Clay Sizemore, describes him as a perfectionist. Despite his polite exterior, Akane possesses a strong and quiet confidence in his considerable abilities, sometimes skipping basic lessons because he feels they are unnecessary for him. He is also known to be businesslike, having no issue bargaining for information, and he harbors an ironic, hidden fear of Halloween monsters that can send him into a catatonic state.

His role in the story is largely that of a guardian and an agent. Under the direction of instructor Sid Barrett, Akane and his partner, Clay, are assigned to enroll undercover in the NOT class. Their primary mission is to secretly protect Princess Anastasia Yngling, who is attending the academy under the alias Anya Hepburn. As an employee of the DWMA Central Intelligence Agency, he works behind the scenes to monitor threats and deal with traitors, using his unassuming status as a NOT student as a perfect cover.

Key relationships define his actions throughout the series. His partnership with Clay Sizemore, who transforms into a demon greatsword, is central to his combat ability. While they share a respectful and effective partnership, Akane is the more assertive of the two and often playfully blames Clay for their minor troubles, such as losing their allowance. He also forms a significant connection with Tsugumi Harudori, one of the main NOT class protagonists. He acts as a mentor figure to her, offering advice and even jokingly proposing to become her meister, though he ultimately encourages her to find her own path.

Throughout the story, Akane demonstrates notable development, primarily through the gradual revelation of his true capabilities and heritage. Initially perceived as just a capable NOT class student, he is shown to be an elite fighter whose physical prowess tops the charts, even outperforming most of the EAT class. His personal journey involves reconciling the lethal assassination techniques he learned from his family with his desire to use them for a noble cause within the DWMA. In later appearances within the original Soul Eater manga, he has visibly aged, sporting a spikier hairstyle and a more rugged jacket, signifying his continued growth and active role as a trusted two-star agent who participates in major battles, such as the confrontation on the moon.

Akane possesses a wide array of notable abilities that set him apart from his peers. He is a highly skilled meister who specializes in wielding a greatsword, the form taken by his partner Clay. His physical abilities are exceptional, granting him enhanced speed, durability, and athleticism that allow him to defeat multiple opponents with ease. He is a practitioner of the Old Ways, an ancient and lethal form of martial arts passed down through his family, which includes assassination techniques and a deadly form of judo. Furthermore, Akane has a powerful soul wavelength and has mastered advanced techniques such as Soul Force, which allows him to project his wavelength as an electrical-like blast to damage opponents or crack concrete. He is also proficient in Soul Perception, enabling him to sense other souls with high precision even under duress.
