TV-Series
Description
Ai is a character from the anime Captain Earth, where she is introduced as a popular and successful idol, working as both a top-selling singer and a model. Beneath this public persona, however, her true identity is that of a Designer Child, an artificial human created to serve as a host for an alien entity. She is the avatar for the Planetary Gear known as Aiatar, making her one of the antagonists in the series, though her role is complicated by her lingering human attachments.
In appearance, Ai is a fair-skinned teenager with blue eyes and short blonde hair. Her slim and petite figure is a contrast to her well-developed physique. Her clothing style changes depending on the context; while working as an idol she wears various performance outfits, but outside of her job she typically wears a black dress with yellow accents and a yellow rose on the chest, complemented by long black gloves and a black hat.
Ai’s personality undergoes a dramatic transformation following her reawakening as a Planetary Gear. Before this event, she is portrayed as cheerful and lively on stage, but secretly she is shy, insecure, and deeply fearful. She worries constantly about maintaining her career and suffers from low self-esteem. This vulnerability is compounded by the fact that she grew up in an institution and did not attend a regular school, a background that tabloid magazines once exposed, causing her considerable distress. After her reawakening, triggered by Moco's telepathic kiss, her personality shifts entirely. She becomes much more confident, daring, and even playful during battle. Despite her newfound identity as an alien invader, she retains a strong attachment to her human fans, famously remarking that she loves them so much she would eat them, a phrase she says "like a vampire." This is a direct reference to the Planetary Gears, who are also called "Space Vampires." She continues to perform as an idol even after her awakening, making her unique among her kind, and she has a tendency to speak in rhymes, particularly while fighting.
Within the story's conflict, Ai serves as an antagonist. Her role is that of a manipulator who uses her public figure as a perfect facade to infiltrate and mask her true nature. She lacks direct combat abilities outside of piloting her Machine Goodfellow, but she is a skilled strategist. In one notable incident, she sneaks onto the protagonists' base and uses a singularity granted to her by another Planetary Gear, Zin, to telekinetically control hundreds of debris pieces, launching a devastating assault on the Earth Engine carrier, Tenkaidou. Her attack is powerful enough to disable Teppei Arashi's Nebula Engine, forcing the hero Daichi Manatsu to make a difficult decision. Her key relationships are primarily with her fellow Planetary Gears, though her bond with her fans remains an important, if twisted, aspect of her character. Her development is marked by the transition from a timid, insecure girl to a bold and confident adversary who embraces her alien nature without completely letting go of her human identity.
