Description
Holy Kujo, born Holy Joestar in 1942, is the daughter of Joseph Joestar and Suzi Q, making her a direct descendant of the Joestar bloodline, which she carries through the distinctive star-shaped birthmark on the back of her left shoulder. She later married a Japanese jazz musician named Sadao Kujo, moved to Japan, and became the mother of Jotaro Kujo, the protagonist of Stardust Crusaders. Her name is sometimes romanized as Holly Kujo, and she adopted the Japanese name Seiko, meaning holy child, after relocating.
Holy possesses a cheerful, carefree, and deeply kind personality that stands out even among her eccentric family. She is consistently shown with a warm smile and maintains a positive, sometimes childish demeanor, such as playfully tickling her father in public or insisting on being called by her Japanese name. Despite her son Jotaro's rude and distant behavior toward her, including blunt insults, Holy remains completely unfazed and continues to dote on him, recognizing the compassionate heart hidden beneath his tough exterior. Her gentle and non-confrontational nature extends to strangers as well; when Noriaki Kakyoin is injured, she tends to his wounds without hesitation, and Kakyoin himself describes her as the type of person who can make anyone feel at ease and soothe their heart. Beneath her bubbly exterior, however, Holy is perceptive and selfless, deliberately hiding the severity of her illness from her family to spare them worry.
Holy serves as the primary catalyst for the plot of Stardust Crusaders. When the vampire DIO awakens after a century, his reemergence causes Stand abilities to manifest in all of Jonathan Joestar's descendants, including Holy. Unlike her father Joseph and her son Jotaro, Holy possesses a gentle spirit entirely unsuited for combat. Because she lacks the necessary fighting spirit or willpower to control her Stand, it cannot fully manifest and instead turns against her. The incomplete Stand behaves like a debilitating disease, causing high fevers, sapping her life force, and gradually deteriorating her health. The Speedwagon Foundation estimates she has approximately fifty days to live unless the source of the problem is eliminated. Since her condition is directly linked to DIO's influence, the only way to save her is to defeat DIO himself. This urgent need to rescue his mother motivates Jotaro to embark on the perilous journey from Japan to Egypt, accompanied by Joseph Joestar, Muhammad Avdol, and later Kakyoin and Jean Pierre Polnareff.
Holy's most significant relationships are with the men in her family. As Jotaro's mother, she loves him unconditionally and believes in his inherent goodness, even when he rebuffs her affection. Her desperate situation pushes Jotaro to fully embrace his role as a Joestar protector. As the only daughter of Joseph Joestar, she remains deeply connected to her father, who rushes to Japan upon learning of her illness and joins the crusade to save her. Her relationship with her own mother, Suzi Q, is echoed in her similarly cheerful disposition. Her husband Sadao is frequently absent due to his musical career, leaving Holy to raise Jotaro largely on her own. Her kindness also creates a key bond with Kakyoin, whose experience of her gentle care influences his decision to join the group on their mission.
In terms of development, Holy remains largely static as a character because she is bedridden for most of the narrative. Her role is that of the motivating force rather than an active participant. However, her condition does evolve from a mysterious illness to a understood consequence of the Stand phenomenon, and ultimately to a cured state following the protagonists victory. After DIO is defeated in Egypt, Holy's Stand ceases its parasitic effect, and she makes a full recovery, returning to her loving and cheerful self.
Holy's Stand is never given a formal name and is never seen in a complete or combat-ready form. It manifests visually as vines or raspberry plant-like growths emerging from her back, mirroring the plant-based nature of her father Joseph's Stand, Hermit Purple. Unlike most Stands, which are controllable extensions of the user's will, Holy's Stand operates involuntarily and harmfully due to her inability to command it. She exhibits no active Stand abilities whatsoever, as her condition is defined entirely by her lack of power rather than any power she possesses. This unusual circumstance of a Stand causing its user harm through passive manifestation makes her case an important exception within the series, directly tied to her non-violent, gentle personality.
