Description
Mochikuni Akai was a senior Gardes pilot and the leader of the Akai squad aboard the seed ship Sidonia, designated as unit 001. He was widely regarded as one of the most skilled pilots in Sidonia’s history, having become the youngest winner of the Gravity Cup and holding that title for thirteen successive cups. His record in the Gravity Festival Gardes competition stood as the longest of any pilot, a testament to his exceptional combat reflexes and tactical acumen.

Akai possessed a laid-back and friendly demeanor, especially in his interactions with the protagonist, Nagate Tanikaze. He was cordial and approachable, never displaying arrogance despite his outstanding achievements. His confidence in his abilities was balanced by a genuine respect for his fellow pilots, and he commanded the Akai squad with a calm authority.

In the story, Akai’s role was that of a top-tier defender of Sidonia. When a new Gauna threat emerged, he and his entire squadron were dispatched to intercept it. However, the Gauna designated 487 proved far more dangerous than anticipated, and Akai and his unit were annihilated in the encounter. His death served as a stark demonstration of the existential danger posed by the Gauna and marked a pivotal moment for Nagate Tanikaze, who would later inherit the responsibility of protecting Sidonia.

Akai’s relationships were defined by his leadership of the Akai squad and his brief but meaningful connection with Nagate. He showed kindness to Nagate, recognizing his potential and treating him as an equal rather than an outsider. Within his own squad, he was a respected commander who led by example.

Development for Mochikuni Akai is limited to his early appearance and heroic demise. His legacy, however, lingers as a benchmark of piloting excellence and as a catalyst for Nagate’s growth. His notable abilities included unparalleled skill in Garde piloting, particularly in close-quarters combat and competition settings, and the strategic judgment to lead a squadron against overwhelming odds.
