Description
East Kaioushin, also known as Shin, is a deity who serves as the ruler of the Eastern Quadrant of the Seventh Universe. He is a member of the divine race known as Shinlings and was born from the World Tree. In terms of appearance, Shin is of short stature and has pink or light purple skin. He has a distinctive large, white mohawk and stern black eyes. His attire consists of traditional Kaioshin garments, which typically include a puffed-sleeve outfit, a dark blue robe with gold lining, and a blue sash, though color variations exist depending on the adaptation. Like all Kaioshin, he wears Potara earrings, which are green in the original source material.
Shin's personality is defined by a deep-seated sense of duty to protect the universe. He is a serious, cautious, and often anxious individual, primarily because he is burdened by the traumatic memories of a horrific event from his past. Millennia before the main events of Dragon Ball Z, the malevolent wizard Bibidi unleashed the demon Majin Buu. Buu systematically slaughtered Shin's fellow deities: the Northern and Western Supreme Kai were killed, the powerful Southern Supreme Kai was absorbed, and the Grand Supreme Kai was also absorbed, which had the effect of transforming Buu into a less intelligent, childlike form. As the youngest and weakest of the five Kaioshin, Shin was the sole survivor of this massacre. This experience left him with a profound fear of Majin Buu and a desperate determination to prevent his return. He later avenged his colleagues by killing Bibidi and then hid the still-sealed Buu in a ball deep beneath the surface of the Earth.
Due to the death of all his peers, Shin is now the de facto ruler of the entire Seventh Universe, often addressed simply as the Supreme Kai. His primary motivation in the story is to stop Majin Buu's release. During the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, he and his loyal bodyguard, Kibito, arrive on Earth seeking the help of the planet's strongest fighters, including Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta. Shin, going by the name Shin to conceal his identity, is often left in shock and disbelief as he witnesses the immense power of the Super Saiyans, who far exceed his expectations of mortal strength. He is accustomed to being the most powerful being in his sphere and frequently misjudges the capabilities of his allies and enemies.
Shin's key relationships are few but significant. His closest and most constant companion is Kibito, who serves as his attendant and bodyguard. Kibito is fiercely loyal, has the ability to heal others, and can teleport using Kai Kai, a divine version of instantaneous movement. Shin also has a relationship with his ancestor, the elderly and perverted Old Kaioshin, who is later freed from the Z Sword. Throughout the conflict with Babidi (Bibidi's son) and Majin Buu, Shin acts as a guide, providing crucial exposition about the villains and attempting to formulate a plan, though his authority is frequently ignored by the more powerful Saiyans, particularly the impulsive Vegeta.
The character undergoes notable development as the saga progresses. Initially paralyzed by fear and trauma, he becomes more proactive. When his initial strategies fail and Majin Buu is revived, Shin is severely wounded. Upon recovering with Kibito's help, he takes Gohan to the Sacred World of the Kais to retrieve the legendary Z Sword, which he believes is the only weapon capable of defeating Buu. In a moment of curiosity, Shin and Kibito test out the Potara earrings, which the Old Kaioshin had just explained create a fused being. They fuse together, becoming a single entity known as Kibito Kai. In the Dragon Ball Z Kai narrative, this fusion is initially mistaken as permanent. Later, in Dragon Ball Super, it is revealed that they used the Namekian Dragon Balls to defuse back into their original separate selves.
As a deity, Shin possesses numerous supernatural abilities. His power level is significantly higher than that of the average mortal; he is confident he could defeat the tyrant Frieza with a single blow, though he is considered the weakest of the original five Kaioshin. His specific abilities include telepathy, the power to read minds, and telekinesis, which he demonstrates by effortlessly paralyzing Gohan. He can also use a form of magical materialization to create objects, such as a cube of Katchin, which is said to be the hardest metal in the universe. He possesses the ability to heal others and can use a divine version of instantaneous movement known as Kai Kai to teleport anywhere in the universe without needing to sense a specific energy signature. In combat, he can fire basic energy blasts and use a Kiai, an invisible shockwave of fighting spirit. During his confrontation with Majin Buu, he utilized a powerful energy attack called Energy's Last.
