Description
Goten is the second son of the main protagonist Goku and his wife Chi-Chi, making him the younger brother of Gohan. He is born during the seven-year period of peace following the Cell Games, which means he grows up never knowing his father, as Goku had sacrificed his life and remained in the Other World.
In Dragon Ball Z Kai, which covers the events of the Majin Buu Saga, Goten is introduced as a young half-Saiyan boy. His most immediately striking characteristic is his nearly identical appearance to his father when Goku was a child. Personality-wise, Goten is friendly, innocent, and somewhat naive, but he also possesses a mischievous side that comes out, especially when he is with his best friend, Trunks.
Unlike his brother Gohan, who was a reluctant fighter, Goten seems to have an innate, almost playful love for combat and training. He displays a natural, prodigious talent for martial arts that far exceeds what might be expected for someone his age. The most shocking demonstration of this is his effortless ability to transform into a Super Saiyan, a feat that took his father years of intense struggle and emotional trauma to achieve. Goten accomplishes this transformation seemingly as a game, astounding his older brother and demonstrating his incredible potential. This early mastery of the form is a key part of his character, highlighting his raw, untapped power.
Goten's primary role in the story is as a new generation of warrior, poised to take over from the older fighters. He is brought to the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament by Gohan, where he competes in the junior division. His final match in this division is against Trunks in a surprisingly powerful and destructive battle for children their age. Following the tournament, as the threat of the evil wizard Babidi and the monstrous Majin Buu emerges, Goten is thrust into a more significant role.
His most important contribution comes through his relationship with Trunks, the son of Vegeta and Bulma. The two boys have a close, competitive friendship and quickly become inseparable partners. Under the guidance of Goku and Piccolo, Goten and Trunks learn the Fusion technique, a complex dance-like maneuver that allows two warriors of equal size and power to merge into a single, vastly more powerful being. Goten and Trunks fuse to create the cocky, hyper-confident, and unpredictable warrior known as Gotenks. As Gotenks, their combined personality becomes a brash and arrogant parody of a hero, more interested in showboating and giving his attacks flashy names than in efficiently defeating his enemy. This overconfidence often leads to failure, but it also provides some of the saga's most memorable and comedic moments.
Key relationships define Goten's journey. His relationship with his father, Goku, is poignant because they meet for the first time at the martial arts tournament. Goten is initially shy and hides behind his mother, overwhelmed by finally seeing the father he has only heard about. His bond with his brother Gohan is one of admiration and training. His mother, Chi-Chi, continues her pattern of wanting her sons to focus on their studies, though Goten's immense power often pulls him toward fighting. However, his most significant relationship is undoubtedly with Trunks. They act like typical young boys, constantly playing, competing, and getting into trouble, but their synergy in battle and ability to fuse shows a deep, unspoken trust in one another.
Over the course of the Majin Buu Saga, Goten develops from simply a gifted but playful child into a young warrior who accepts the responsibility of defending the Earth. While he and Trunks fail to defeat Super Buu, even after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and mastering Super Saiyan 3 as Gotenks, their efforts are crucial in buying time for Gohan's potential to be unlocked and eventually for Goku and Vegeta to formulate a final plan. In the final battle against Kid Buu, Goten contributes what he can, lending his energy to Goku's Spirit Bomb that ultimately destroys the villain.
In terms of notable abilities, beyond his effortless Super Saiyan transformation, Goten possesses the standard warrior skills of flight and energy manipulation. He has his own variation of his father's signature attack, though he famously mispronounces the name, calling it the Kamekameha instead of the Kamehameha. His defining ability, however, is the Fusion Dance, which he performs with Trunks. The success of this technique relies on perfect synchronization, and the boys' frequent failures, resulting in a variety of malformed, comical failed fusions, are a running joke before they finally achieve the correct form of Gotenks. Through Gotenks, Goten can access even more powerful transformations, like Super Saiyan 3, though this is a shared achievement rather than one he can attain on his own.
