Kara Edwards
Description
Kara Edwards is an American voice actress widely recognized for her extensive work in English dubs of Japanese anime, primarily produced by Funimation (now Crunchyroll). Born on February 17, 1977, in Lubbock, Texas, she began her career in broadcasting after high school, securing a role at Radio Disney in Dallas. There, she worked as a writer, producer, and voice director before becoming a co-host on the syndicated Squeege and Kara Show. Her time in radio also included work in commercial voice-over for major brands and a move to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she co-hosted popular morning shows for several years.
Edwards's entry into anime voice acting began during her Radio Disney years when she auditioned for Funimation. Her first role was as Lime in an episode of Dragon Ball Z. This led to her being cast in her most iconic and enduring roles: the young Saiyan hero Son Goten and the spirited martial artist Videl in the Dragon Ball Z series. She continued to voice these characters across the franchise's numerous sequels, films, and specials, including Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, and the crossover special Dream 9 Toriko & One Piece & Dragon Ball Z Chō Collaboration Special!!. Her performances as Goten and Videl have made her a beloved figure among Dragon Ball fans worldwide.
In August 2006, while still working in radio, Edwards attended a comic convention in Chicago with fellow voice actors. The overwhelming fan response, with people waiting for hours to get her autograph, solidified her passion for voice acting. Shortly after, she left her radio career to pursue voice work full-time, relocating to Dallas to be closer to the industry.
Beyond the Dragon Ball franchise, Edwards has demonstrated considerable range, voicing a wide variety of characters. Her notable roles include the ethereal and powerful angeloid Nymph in the Heaven's Lost Property series and its films, the timid yet brilliant programmer Chihiro Fujisaki in Danganronpa: The Animation, the sadistic Vento of the Front in A Certain Magical Index II, and the ninja Hikage in Senran Kagura Shinovi Master. She has also lent her voice to characters such as Pipimi in the surreal comedy Pop Team Epic, Mio in Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-, the Dungeon Ant Queen in The Dungeon of Black Company, Tomoyo Aragaki in The Gymnastics Samurai, Christina Hayden in Wise Man's Grandchild, Mujina in SSSS.Dynazenon, Sakura Nanamine in Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, Kaori Asakura in YU-NO, Patty Baldwin in The Sacred Blacksmith, and Fe in Nichijou - My Ordinary Life.
Throughout her career, Edwards has been a frequent collaborator with Funimation, working alongside a consistent ensemble of voice actors such as Christopher Sabat, Sean Schemmel, and Kyle Hebert. She has also used pseudonyms for certain credits, including Janét Mason. Her work extends beyond anime into video games, where she has reprised her Dragon Ball roles in numerous titles and voiced characters in games like SMITE and Battleborn, as well as live-action projects and children's programming.
