Description
Febrie is an anime-original character introduced in the second half of A Certain Scientific Railgun S, serving as a central figure in the Silent Party Arc. She is a petite girl with long blond hair, purple eyes, and two distinctive ahoge, or cowlicks, on top of her head. She typically wears a black and white gothic lolita dress, a gift from Nunotaba Shinobu, and later receives a white dress with black ribbons from Kongou Mitsuko. A heart-shaped satchel hangs from her shoulder, and she is almost never seen without a piece of candy, usually a green lollipop, in her mouth. This candy has an extremely strong taste that proves overwhelming for any other character who attempts to sample it.
Febrie is not a normal human but a Chemicaloid, an artificial being created entirely through scientific means by a group of young researchers known as STUDY. She shares a biological base with another Chemicaloid named Janie, who is referred to as her older twin sister. Her creation involved the use of Testament, a device that inputs information directly into a subject's mind. This process gave her fundamental knowledge and programmed her autonomic nervous functions, essentially the information required to keep her alive. As a consequence, her knowledge has certain biases, similar to the Misaka Sisters who were also programmed with Testament. A critical flaw in her design is that her body's metabolic processes naturally secrete a poison. If left unchecked, this toxin accumulates and disrupts her organ functions, eventually making her ill and causing her death. The only thing that neutralizes this poison is the specific candy she constantly eats, making the supply of these lollipops a matter of life and death.
In terms of personality, Febrie acts like a young child, naïve to the grave dangers that surround her. She is quick to befriend people, showing trust and warmth to those who are kind to her. She calls her friends by their given names and often shortens them, such as calling Uiharu "Uiha." She is particularly close to Saten Ruiko, who has a natural knack for handling children and becomes something like a protector for her. For reasons that are initially unclear, Febrie displays a strong, stubborn antagonism towards Misaka Mikoto when they first meet. She is willful and ignores Mikoto while being friendly with everyone else, leading to an extended effort by Mikoto to win her affections. Her dislike eventually subsides after Mikoto protects her from danger. Febrie is easily distracted by Gekota, a popular frog mascot in Academy City, and she especially loves a rare pink Gekota finger puppet that she takes from Mikoto. This stubborn and trusting nature, combined with her childish innocence, makes her a character who elicits strong protective instincts from those around her.
Febrie's role in the story is primarily as a motivating force for the protagonists. After being freed by Nunotaba Shinobu, who gives her the lollipops and clothes, she is discovered by Misaka Mikoto and her friends sleeping in a park flower garden. As they try to find her home, they uncover the truth of her artificial nature and her connection to STUDY, who are hunting her. Her limited lifespan, dictated by her remaining lollipops, creates a pressing time limit for the heroes to act. Her presence forces Mikoto to confront themes similar to those from the Sisters Arc, concerning the value of artificial life, and demonstrates Mikoto's personal growth as she learns to rely on her friends instead of carrying the burden alone. Febrie also shares a poignant connection with the Misaka Sisters; one of them, Misaka 10032, visits her in the hospital, recognizing the similarities in their existences as lab-created beings who refer to a "big sister."
Throughout the arc, Febrie undergoes subtle but important development. Her initial distrust of Mikoto transforms into a genuine bond, with Mikoto eventually letting her keep the precious pink Gekota, symbolically treating her like a little sister. In the climax, it is Febrie's strong emotions, transmitted through the biological link she shares with her twin, that reach Janie when she is trapped inside a runaway system. This act of emotional connection, described as the "power of love," successfully frees her sister when technological means fail. In the end, like the Misaka Sisters, Febrie requires body readjustments that Academy City cannot provide. She leaves the city for a foreign institution to receive treatment, accompanied by Janie and a repentant Shinobu, who becomes her guardian.
Regarding her notable abilities, Febrie's powers are not extensively displayed but are considered significant enough that her creators believed they would make Academy City take notice. She has demonstrated the ability to force a Powered Suit to shut down simply by being near it. She is also capable of detecting the general location of her sister Janie whenever Janie uses her own esper power, Diffusion Ghost. Some sources also describe a transportational beam ability that allows her to move a large object from one place to another. These powers are tied to her nature as a Chemicaloid and are part of STUDY's larger plan to revolutionize the balance of power in Academy City.
