TV-Series
Description
Eternal Feather, whose birth name is Hoàng Thi Mai, is a senior student in the NOT Class at the Death Weapon Meister Academy, appearing as a prominent figure in the spin-off series. Her common name is not her original one; it is a nickname given to her by fellow student Kim Diehl, who chose the title because of Eternal Feather's pale skin. Kim then officially registered the name at the school, and due to Shibusen's policies, Eternal Feather is bound to use it for a minimum of two years. She harbors a degree of fear and resentment towards Kim for this act, especially as Kim demanded financial compensation for the moniker.
In terms of personality, Eternal Feather is consistently kind, friendly, and remarkably selfless. She is always willing to offer assistance and guidance, which makes her a natural mentor and an older sister figure to younger students, particularly the main protagonists Tsugumi, Meme, and Anya. Her generosity extends to buying meals for them when they lose their allowances. She is also highly knowledgeable about the inner workings of the academy and is well-connected socially, staying informed on the latest rumors and gossip, which makes her an invaluable source of information for her juniors. Despite her many positive traits, she has a noticeably passive and timid side, which leaves her susceptible to being pushed around by more assertive individuals like Kim Diehl. She is also deeply embarrassed by her forced nickname, though she generally maintains a courteous and respectful demeanor toward everyone, even when facing the eccentricities of other staff and students. Physically, Eternal Feather is a relatively tall young girl with fair skin, blue eyes, and black hair styled with short bangs and two short braids. She wears distinctive oval glasses with red frames and typically dons a long, blue robe-like gown with a wide white collar.
As a Demon Weapon, Eternal Feather has the demonstrated ability to perform a partial transformation, changing her entire left arm into a large butterfly knife. In this form, which has been called the Demon Butterfly Knife, only her hand is left unchanged. Her full weapon form, however, has never been seen. While she is a NOT Class student not primarily focused on combat, when placed under mind control, she is capable of fighting evenly for a short time against powerful EAT Class students like Maka Albarn and Soul Eater, though it is unclear if this combat prowess originates from her own skills or the influence of her controller.
Eternal Feather’s role in the story is largely that of a supportive senior and guide. Initially, she is assigned to show the new protagonists around Death City and their dormitory, offering them crucial advice and warning them about the so-called "witch of the girls' dormitory," who is in fact Kim Diehl. She is trusted and respected by many at the academy due to her supportive nature. Her key relationships are primarily defined by this mentorship, especially with Tsugumi, Anya, and Meme, whom she genuinely cares for. Her relationship with Kim Diehl is central to her background and is characterized by fear, intimidation, and the lingering trauma of being renamed and exploited.
Her most significant development occurs during the "Shibusen Traitor" arc, where she becomes a victim of the witch Shaula Gorgon. While working as a vendor at the Death Bazaar, Eternal Feather is tricked into trying on a scorpion ring. This ring injects her with a venom that places her completely under Shaula's mental control. As an experiment to test the ring's power, Shaula commands a now-emotionless and silent Eternal Feather to attack passersby, revealing her weapon form in the process. She then confronts Maka and Soul, but when it becomes clear she cannot win, Shaula whispers a new command. In a horrifying turn, Eternal Feather is forced to place her own transformed blade to her neck. Despite tears streaming down her face, which suggests she is aware of her actions but unable to stop, she slashes her own throat and collapses. She survives the self-inflicted injury and undergoes surgery and rehabilitation under the care of the eccentric Dr. Franken Stein. After her recovery, she is discharged and welcomed back by her friends, bearing a scar on her neck which she chooses to view as a badge of honor rather than a disfigurement.
