Description
East Kaiōshin, often referred to simply as Supreme Kai in many versions of the story, is a divine being who serves as the ruler of the eastern quadrant of the universe. He is a member of the Kaiōshin race, a group of creator deities responsible for maintaining order, fostering life, and overseeing the four directional quadrants of the cosmos. Physically, East Kaiōshin is short in stature with purple skin and a distinctive white mohawk. He dresses in elegant, formal attire befitting his high status, including a blue coat with red lining and an orange waist cloak, and he is almost always seen in the company of his loyal bodyguard, Kibito.

In terms of personality, East Kaiōshin initially projects an aura of mystery, calmness, and rational authority, as one might expect from a supreme being. However, as the threat of Majin Buu emerges, his demeanor shifts dramatically. Throughout his encounter with the Z-Fighters, he frequently displays shock, fear, and humility, often expressing disbelief at the raw power of fighters like Goku and Vegeta. This change reveals a more fearful and innocent side, a direct consequence of his traumatic past. He is wise in the ways of the universe but can be surprisingly ignorant of specific mortal matters, such as the power of Super Saiyans or the nature of the Dragon Balls. He holds a strong sense of duty to protect the universe and initially views morality in strict terms of good and evil, though his perspective broadens over time as he witnesses the complexities of Earth's heroes.

East Kaiōshin’s primary motivation is his overwhelming desire to prevent the resurrection of Majin Buu, a monstrous entity that he personally witnessed destroy his fellow Supreme Kais thousands of years prior. He was present when the original Majin Buu killed his colleagues, the North, West, and South Kaiōshin, and absorbed the Grand Kaiōshin. This traumatic event is the driving force behind his actions, instilling in him a deep-seated fear of the creature and a desperate need to stop the wizard Babidi from unleashing it again. He travels to Earth specifically to enlist the help of the planet's strongest warriors, believing they are the only hope to avert a universal catastrophe.

His role in the story is that of a guide and a catalyst. He arrives during the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament and, after a disguised start, reveals the hidden threat of Babidi and Dabura to the heroes. He leads Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta into Babidi's spaceship, though he often proves to be outmatched and is shocked by how effortlessly the Saiyans defeat enemies he had assumed were insurmountable. After Buu is revived, East Kaiōshin is severely injured but survives. He later takes Gohan to the Sacred World of the Kai to train with the legendary Z Sword, a plan that inadvertently releases his ancestor, the Elder Kaiōshin, who then unlocks Gohan's hidden potential.

Key relationships define his interactions. His most constant companion is Kibito, who serves as his bodyguard, healer, and friend. Their bond is so strong that they eventually use the Potara earrings to fuse permanently into a single being known as Kibitoshin (also referred to as Kibito Kai). He also has a respectful, if often bewildered, relationship with the other Z-Fighters, particularly Gohan, whom he pulls into a mentorship role, and Goku, whose power and reckless courage both alarm and impress him. His relationship with his ancestor, the Elder Kaiōshin, is one of deference to a much older and more experienced, albeit eccentric, divine figure.

Throughout the story, East Kaiōshin undergoes notable development. He transitions from a confident, mysterious god who looks down on mortal fighters to a humbled observer who acknowledges his own limitations. He begins with a rigid moral code but learns from Goku and the others that strength and redemption can come from unexpected places. The most significant change is his permanent fusion with Kibito, which creates a new personality and being that possesses the combined powers and memories of both. As a deity, East Kaiōshin possesses several notable abilities. He has the power of teleportation, allowing him and others to instantaneously travel anywhere in the universe. He can also heal injuries, paralyze opponents with a gesture, and use telekinesis. In combat, he can project invisible energy blasts known as Kiai. Despite these divine powers, he is considerably weaker than the main Saiyan characters and the primary villains of his arc, which is a central point of his character. Following the fusion with Kibito, the resulting Kibitoshin is much more powerful and retains all of these abilities.
