Description
Dranbalt, also known by his alias Mest Gryder, is a Mage from the Fairy Tail universe whose complex history intertwines the worlds of the Magic Council and the renowned wizard guild. His narrative is defined by a fundamental conflict between duty and personal connection.

Physically, Dranbalt is a lean man of average height with short black hair and distinctive emerald green eyes. The left side of his face is marked by three prominent scars that cross his eyebrow and forehead. He often wears a simple earring on his left ear. His appearance later changes after the seven-year time skip, gaining a small goatee and slightly longer, messier hair.

Initially introduced as a Fairy Tail member named Mest Gryder, claiming to be a disciple of the guild master Mystogan, his true identity is that of an intelligence officer for the Magic Council. His mission was to infiltrate the guild to find evidence that could justify shutting down Fairy Tail, hoping to earn a promotion from the Council, whose leadership harbored a strong dislike for the guild.

Despite his career-driven motivations, Dranbalt is not a villain. He is described as having a strong sense of justice and a willingness to do what is right, even if it means breaking rules. While undercover, he adopted quirky behaviors to fit in, such as tasting snow or entering a river out of curiosity, presenting a facade of being a lively guild member. However, beneath this act, a genuine and caring personality emerges. He forms a sincere bond with the young Dragon Slayer Wendy Marvell, whom he chooses as his partner for the S-Class trials, and he shows visible distress when she is in danger.

His role in the story becomes critical during the battle against Grimoire Heart on Tenrou Island. After his cover is blown, Dranbalt is torn. While the Council plans to destroy the entire island with the ultimate weapon Etherion, he opposes this decision, openly stating that Fairy Tail is not evil like their enemies. In a display of true heroism, he teleports back to the island to warn the guild, sacrificing his mission to save the Mages he had grown to respect. He attempts to teleport them to safety, but they refuse to abandon their home.

Key relationships define his development. His friendship with Wendy Marvell is the most significant, acting as the catalyst for his change of heart as he repeatedly risks his mission to protect her. He also works closely with fellow Council member Lahar, who understands his inner conflict regarding Fairy Tail. After the destruction of the Council headquarters by the Tartaros guild, Dranbalt eventually leaves the Rune Knights and officially joins Fairy Tail as a full-fledged member, solidifying the loyalty he demonstrated during the Tenrou Island incident.

Regarding his notable abilities, Dranbalt wields Memory Control Magic, which allowed him to alter the memories of the entire Fairy Tail guild to believe he was a long-standing member. He is also highly proficient in a form of Teleportation Magic. This allows him to move himself and others across vast distances instantly, making him a valuable asset for infiltration and rescue missions.
