Description
Bickslow is a mage belonging to the Fairy Tail guild, best known as a member of the Thunder God Tribe, the personal guard unit formed by Laxus Dreyar. He is twenty-two years old and is easily recognized by his eccentric and intimidating appearance. His look is defined by black armor, a visor that often conceals part of his face, and a blue and black mohawk. A prominent facial tattoo and his guild mark, which is inked on his tongue, are frequently visible due to his habit of sticking it out while laughing in a manic manner.
Bickslow possesses a flamboyant and eccentric personality. He is known for his maniacal laughter and a carefree, mischievous attitude. While he enjoys combat, his demeanor is not purely aggressive; he has a playful side, often engaging in lighthearted teasing with other guild members. For example, he and Happy once playfully questioned Lucy Heartfilia about her relationship with the Celestial Spirit Loke. He also displays an irreverent sense of humor, such as when he dismissed his teammate Freed Justine's request for two female opponents to put on more clothing, suggesting they were fine as they were. His loyalty, however, is one of his strongest traits, particularly toward Laxus. He was willing to oppose his own guild on Laxus's orders during the Battle of Fairy Tail arc and expressed resentment when Laxus was exiled from the guild. This devotion motivated him and Freed to strive for greater strength in Laxus's absence during the S-Class trials.
His core motivation is intertwined with his loyalty to Laxus and his desire to grow stronger alongside his teammates in the Thunder God Tribe. After Laxus's temporary expulsion, Bickslow was driven to prove his own power and help fill the void left by his leader. Over time, his motivations expand from serving a single person to protecting the entire guild, showing his integration into the larger Fairy Tail family.
In the story, Bickslow serves as a significant supporting character and a powerful ally. He is first introduced as an antagonist during the Battle of Fairy Tail arc, where he systematically hunts down and defeats several of his guildmates, including Gray Fullbuster, before being defeated by Lucy and Loke. After this conflict and Laxus's departure, he becomes a more integral and cooperative member of the guild. He plays a key role during the S-Class Trial on Tenrou Island, partnering with Freed, and later participates in the battle against the dark guild Grimoire Heart. He also temporarily leaves Fairy Tail with the rest of the Thunder God Tribe when the guild disbands, joining Blue Pegasus before eventually returning upon Fairy Tail's reformation.
Bickslow's key relationships are centered on his team. He shares an extremely close bond with Laxus Dreyar, whom he respects above almost anyone else. His partnership with Freed Justine is particularly strong; they fight together seamlessly and support each other's ambitions. He also frequently bickers with his other teammate, Evergreen, often teasing her about her romantic interest in their guildmate Elfman. While initially dismissive of those he considered weak, his relationship with the broader Fairy Tail membership warms considerably after Laxus's exile, as he learns to value all his comrades.
His development sees him transition from a loyal subordinate willing to harm his friends for his leader's cause to a more independent and devoted member of the Fairy Tail community. He retains his eerie laugh and strange habits but channels his power toward the guild's protection rather than its conquest.
Bickslow wields a unique and formidable set of magical abilities. His primary magic is Seith Magic, also known as Human Possession. This allows him to see human souls and to seal wandering souls into inanimate objects, which he then controls as his puppets. He affectionately refers to these five floating, totem-like dolls as his babies. These dolls are his main method of attack, capable of firing powerful energy beams and forming different attack patterns, such as the powerful Baryon Formation. He is also able to transfer the souls to different containers, like store mannequins, if his original dolls are incapacitated.
His secondary magic is called Figure Eyes. With this eye-based ability, anyone who makes direct eye contact with Bickslow has their soul controlled, effectively turning them into a doll under his command. This ability is so potent that he wears a visor to prevent accidental activation. Despite his magical prowess, Bickslow is noted to be relatively weak in physical combat without his dolls and his Figure Eyes.
