Description
Bacchus Groh is an S-Class Mage belonging to the Quatro Cerberus Guild. His name, which he shares with the Roman god of wine, is fitting given his deep and well-known fondness for alcohol. He carries a gourd shaped like a calabash to store his drink, which he consumes frequently and in great quantity. In battle, he can become more powerful when intoxicated, earning him the epithets "The Drunk Falcon" and "Bacchus of the Drunk-Chop Hanging Palm".

In terms of appearance, Bacchus is a tall and muscular man with fair skin. His straight black hair is slicked back and gathered into a bun at the back of his head, where it is wrapped in a white cloth, a style reminiscent of ancient Chinese warriors. This aesthetic is carried through in his attire, which consists of dark blue armor plates on his arms and shoulders, a wide armored collar, and very baggy dark pants with flame-like motifs. He wears his guild's stamp on the center of his muscular, exposed back. His slanted eyes have dark lines and black pupils with lighter irises, and he possesses sharp canine teeth.

Bacchus has a boisterous and exuberant personality, often referring to spirit as being "wild". He is highly competitive, especially when it comes to drinking. This competitive nature was displayed immediately upon his introduction, when he approached Cana Alberona of Fairy Tail and challenged her to a drinking contest, which he won. While sober, he retains this competitive edge, but when drunk, his lack of decorum becomes more pronounced. After defeating Cana, he took her bikini top as a "trophy," and before his match with Elfman Strauss, he proposed a bet that would grant him a night with Elfman's sisters, Mirajane and Lisanna, if he won. Despite these perverse tendencies, Bacchus possesses a clear sense of honor. After losing to Elfman, he acknowledged his opponent as a true man, admitted defeat without excuses, and cheerfully agreed to honor the bet he lost, which forced his guild's team to be renamed "Quatro Puppy" for the remainder of the Grand Magic Games, calling it a "promise between men".

Bacchus's primary motivation stems from his pride as a warrior and his love for a good fight. He has a long-standing, unresolved rivalry with Fairy Tail's S-Class Mage, Erza Scarlet, as the two had fought many times on jobs in the past without either claiming victory. He was inspired to join the Grand Magic Games after seeing his guild's poor performance, feeling his spirit stirred by their lackluster showing. His goal was to prove his strength and settle his score with Erza, though circumstances repeatedly prevented this direct confrontation.

Throughout the Grand Magic Games arc, Bacchus plays a significant role as a major competitor. On the second day, he won the Chariot event by using his immense strength to destroy the chariots around him, showcasing his raw power. His most pivotal moment came when he was chosen to fight for the king. Instead of facing his rival Erza, he was pitted against Elfman Strauss due to a misunderstanding. Underestimating his opponent, Bacchus fought leisurely without alcohol, but after Elfman raised the stakes with a humiliating bet for their guild, Bacchus became serious. He consumed his alcohol and unleashed his Drunk-Chop Hanging Fist, landing seven devastating blows in an instant. However, Elfman had transformed into his Beast Soul: Lizardman, whose hard scales injured Bacchus's palms with each strike. Bacchus eventually collapsed from exhaustion and the accumulated damage, giving Fairy Tail the victory. He later participated in a tag battle, but he and his partner were defeated by Ichiya of Blue Pegasus. On the final day of the games, he was swiftly taken out by a surprise attack from Sting Eucliffe of Sabertooth, who considered him a manageable target. When ten thousand dragons later attacked the kingdom of Fiore, Bacchus fought against them, even being killed at one point before time was reversed by Ultear Milkovich, allowing him to survive the battle.

Bacchus's key relationships are primarily with his rivals in Fairy Tail. His long history of unfinished battles with Erza Scarlet is a defining aspect of his past, and the two share a mutual respect as formidable warriors. His most developed relationship is with Elfman Strauss. Though he initially looked down on Elfman, their fight resulted in a deep mutual respect, with both sharing similar beliefs about manhood and honor. He also has a connection with Cana Alberona as a fellow heavy drinker, later challenging her to another contest after the Games concluded.

Over the course of the story, Bacchus undergoes subtle development. He enters the tournament as an arrogant and confident S-Class mage who does not take his opponents seriously. His unexpected defeat by Elfman, whom he considered far beneath him, serves as a humbling experience. He honors the embarrassing bet he lost, showing he is a man of his word, and reportedly begins training harder after the tournament, motivated by his humiliation.

Bacchus's notable abilities center on his mastery of a unique fighting style. He uses Palm Magic, which focuses magical power into the palms of his hands. This magic is combined with the martial art Chop Hanging Palm, which allows him to deliver devastating palm strikes. He has an incredible tolerance for alcohol, and when he drinks, his fighting style evolves into Drunk-Chop Hanging Palm, a technique reminiscent of the real-world "drunken fist" style of kung fu. In this state, his speed and the power of his blows are said to become unpredictable and exponentially stronger, allowing him to move so quickly it appears as if he is teleporting. A specific technique he employs is Under Moonlight, a swift palm strike that can send opponents flying. Beyond his magical martial arts, Bacchus possesses immense physical strength, as shown when he destroyed multiple chariots with a single stomp, and high levels of agility and reflexes that make him a formidable close-range combatant.
