Description
Caprico is the name taken by the Celestial Spirit Capricorn while he was forcibly merged with the human mage Zoldeo and served as a member of the dark guild Grimoire Heart's elite unit, the Seven Kin of Purgatory. Capricorn himself is one of the twelve Golden Zodiac Keys, representing the constellation of the Goat, and was originally contracted to the celestial spirit mage Layla Heartfilia. When Layla retired from magic due to fatigue, she entrusted three of her keys, including Capricorn's, to different individuals. Capricorn's key was given to Zoldeo, but with a solemn pact that the spirit would one day lend his strength to Layla's child if that child chose to become a mage.
Initially, Zoldeo agreed to this promise, but he was eventually consumed by darkness and his pursuit of power. He used a forbidden Lost Magic on Capricorn, breaking a sacred taboo of the magical world. As a consequence and a punishment, Zoldeo's consciousness merged with Capricorn's body, leading to a seventeen-year period where the mage's personality dominated the spirit's form. During this time, the possessed entity became known as Caprico and joined Grimoire Heart. In this state, Caprico possessed a calm, serious, and almost emotionless demeanor, showing little of Capricorn's true nature. He was a formidable and strategic fighter, demonstrating great physical speed, powerful kicks, and proficiency in combat.
The character's motivations while merged were aligned with Grimoire Heart's goal of reviving the black wizard Zeref to create a world where only mages could survive. During the battle on Tenrou Island, Caprico confronted Fairy Tail mages Lucy Heartfilia, Gray Fullbuster, Cana Alberona, and the celestial spirit Loke. He wielded Zoldeo's Human Subordination Magic, which could weaken nearby humans and even enslave them, allowing him to summon historical figures like the general San Jiao Shin to fight for him. Caprico gained the upper hand but flew into a rage upon realizing that Lucy was the daughter of his former master, Layla, declaring that he would not let her escape alive, which was a residual effect of Zoldeo's unstable emotions.
In the ensuing fight, Loke recognized that the being before him was the stolen celestial spirit Capricorn. When Zoldeo attempted to leave Capricorn's body to possess Loke instead, the plan backfired. Loke transferred his own Regulus magic into Capricorn, allowing the true spirit to temporarily regain control and strike Zoldeo down. With Zoldeo's defeat, Capricorn was freed from his long enslavement. He decided to return to the Celestial Spirit World to rest and recover his strength, with the intention of returning to honor his original pact with Layla. True to his word, Capricorn later appears as one of Lucy Heartfilia's contracted spirits.
After being freed, Capricorn's true personality emerges. He is profoundly loyal and respectful, unfailingly addressing others with the honorific "-sama" and stating that his power has always belonged to Lucy, as he sees it as an inheritance from her mother. He has a more gentle and appreciative side, complimenting Lucy's interpretation that the One Magic, the source of all magic, is love. He is also highly skilled as a teacher, summoned by Lucy specifically to help train her and raise her magical power level for the Grand Magic Games. In this role, he acts as a wise and dignified mentor, often donning a formal butler's suit which contrasts with the more villainous attire he wore while possessed. He also took part in the ritual to seal the Eclipse Gate, using his strength alongside the other eleven Zodiac spirits to prevent dragons from entering the human world. Capricorn's key relationships are central to his identity: his original unbreakable bond and promise to Layla Heartfilia, his tragic and adversarial enslavement to Zoldeo, and his eventual, fulfilling service as a loyal guide and protector to Lucy Heartfilia. As a celestial spirit, Capricorn is an immortal being, cannot die under normal circumstances, and possesses enhanced physical strength, allowing him to carry people with ease, as well as being an expert hand-to-hand combatant capable of landing powerful blows on powerful opponents like the dark guild master Hades.
