Description
Kou Yaten is the civilian identity of Sailor Star Healer, one of the Sailor Starlights introduced in the anime arc Sailor Moon Sailor Stars. Yaten originally comes from the planet Kinmoku, which was devastated by the tyrant Sailor Galaxia. Along with comrades Kou Seiya and Kou Taiki, Yaten travels to Earth to locate their missing princess, Kakyuu, and to protect the galaxy from Galaxia’s threat. To conceal their mission, the three assume the roles of the male pop idol group Three Lights, in which Yaten serves as keyboardist and background vocalist. In civilian life, Yaten physically takes on a male form and attends Juuban High School alongside the series’ main characters. When transforming into Sailor Star Healer, he becomes a female Sailor Guardian with long silver hair tied in a low ponytail, green eyes, and emerald earrings. Among the three Starlights, Yaten is the shortest.
Yaten’s personality is markedly distant and cynical. He often avoids socializing, preferring to direct all energy toward the mission of finding Princess Kakyuu so they can leave Earth as quickly as possible. His remarks are frequently blunt and sharp-edged, which can alienate others even within his own group. On one occasion, his fellow Starlights admonish him for behavior that might cost them fans. Yaten has little patience for frivolity or physical exertion, and he openly dislikes sports and gym class. He holds a deep-seated mistrust of humans and initially deems Earth not his responsibility, a view that puts him at odds with the Earth-based Sailor Guardians. Despite this aloofness, Yaten possesses the strongest spiritual sensitivity among the Starlights; he can perceive when Sailor Galaxia’s minions have extracted a Starseed, giving him an intuitive edge in battle.
Yaten’s core motivation is unwavering loyalty to Princess Kakyuu and the desire to restore their ruined home. This drive explains his single-minded focus and his reluctance to form emotional ties on Earth. He believes Seiya’s growing closeness to Usagi Tsukino is a distraction and a potential danger, an opinion he shares with Taiki as well as Sailors Uranus and Neptune. However, beneath the thorny exterior, Yaten reveals a gentler side through his fondness for cats. His most notable relationship is with Luna, the feline advisor to the Sailor Guardians. Luna manages to reach Yaten in a way few others can, and at a critical moment, she inspires him to continue fighting rather than give in to despair. As the season progresses, Yaten also begins to bond with Sailor Venus, Minako Aino, which helps soften his guarded nature. Near the story’s conclusion, his attitude toward the Earth’s protectors shifts, and he comes to cooperate more fully with them, culminating in the united effort to defeat Galaxia and the Chaos entity.
