Description
Prinz Diamond, known in the Japanese version as Prince Demande, is the leader of the Black Moon Clan and a central antagonist of the anime Sailor Moon R. He rules the planet Nemesis in the 30th century and commands the clan's attacks on Crystal Tokyo, the future city ruled by Neo-Queen Serenity.
His background shapes much of his character. He and his people are descendants of prisoners and criminals who were exiled from Earth, and his original intention was to approach Neo-Queen Serenity peacefully and explain that his people were descendants of criminals, not criminals themselves. However, the mysterious advisor Wiseman gradually manipulated him, feeding his resentment until he became unforgiving toward the people of Earth. The Black Moon Clan views Crystal Tokyo as corrupt because Neo-Queen Serenity used the Silver Crystal to extend human life unnaturally, which they consider a crime against nature.
Personality-wise, Diamond is proud, impulsive, and authoritarian, with a tendency to act on sudden emotion. His younger brother Sapphire describes him as unstable, destructive, and easily distracted by his own feelings, a weakness that Wiseman exploits. He is also possessive and dominating, wanting to take what he desires rather than earn it. His motivations begin with the goal of destroying Crystal Tokyo and altering history so that the Moon Kingdom never rises, but they shift dramatically when he catches a glimpse of Neo-Queen Serenity during an attack on the city. He becomes obsessed with her, fascinated especially by the anger in her eyes, and this obsession comes to define his actions for the rest of the story. It leads him to abduct her past self, the teenage Usagi, and attempt to brainwash her with his third eye so that she will become his queen.
In the story, Diamond oversees the Black Moon Clan's campaign against Crystal Tokyo and its pursuit of the young Chibiusa into the 20th century, using the destructive power of the Malefic Black Crystal. The plot follows his escalating fixation on Sailor Moon, his growing conflict with his brother, and his eventual realization that Wiseman has been manipulating him all along. His turning point comes near the end, when he finally understands the truth after Sapphire tries to warn him and after Sailor Moon pleads with him. When Wiseman attempts to kill Sailor Moon, Diamond shields her with his own body. Fatally wounded, he musters enough strength to temporarily subdue Wiseman, asks Sailor Moon for forgiveness, and requests that she look after the remaining inhabitants of Nemesis before dying in her arms.
His key relationships are central to his arc. Sapphire, his younger brother, is his closest ally and the one who tries to open his eyes to Wiseman's treachery; Sapphire's death at Wiseman's hands helps push Diamond toward his final change of heart. Esmeraude serves him and harbors romantic feelings for him, though he does not return them. Wiseman functions as his trusted but treacherous advisor, ultimately revealed as the one who used the entire clan for his own purposes. His most defining relationship is with Sailor Moon, which moves from obsession with her future self to a fixation on her past self, and finally to a self-sacrificing act of protection.
In terms of abilities, Diamond is a formidable fighter. He wields the Malefic Black Crystal, which grants destructive energy attacks and time-related powers, and his black crystal earrings allow him and other clan members to teleport. Like all members of the Black Moon Clan, he bears an inverted black crescent on his forehead, the reverse of the marking of the Silver Millennium. He also possesses a third eye that he uses in his attempt to brainwash Sailor Moon. His appearance is distinctive: short white hair, purple eyes, a white suit with blue embroidery, a blue cape, and black crystal earrings, with his name and diamond pendant reflecting the gemstone motif common to the clan's leading members.
