Description
Esmeraude is a major antagonist from the Sailor Moon R anime, serving as a high-ranking member of the Black Moon Clan, a group of villains from the 30th century. She is a tall, vain, and glamorous woman who strives to project an image of divine elegance. Her appearance is striking, characterized by long, flowing green hair and a rotated crescent moon mark on her forehead. Her standard attire includes a black turtleneck dress adorned with three large emeralds, dark green opera-length gloves, and black, knee-high stiletto boots. She has brown eyes and is known for her distinctive, haughty laugh.
Personality-wise, Esmeraude is defined by her extreme vanity, greed, and selfishness. She is utterly obsessed with Prince Demande, the leader of the Black Moon Clan, and her primary motivation is to win his affection and become his queen. This obsession fuels a deep and bitter jealousy towards Sailor Moon, upon whom Prince Demande has focused his own unwanted attention. Esmeraude is also portrayed as somewhat decadent and easily distracted by luxuries such as fine cakes and hot baths, which adds a layer of self-indulgent frivolity to her otherwise malicious nature. She is manipulative and deceitful, showing a willingness to lie and betray her allies to achieve her goals.
In the narrative, Esmeraude first rises to prominence by callously taking the place of her comrade, Rubeus. She appears on his ship not to help but to gloat over his failures, and she ultimately leaves him to die as his vessel explodes. After assuming command of the Earth-based operations, she leads the assault on Tokyo, planting Dark Wedges provided by her ally Saphir to destabilize the area and sending monster droids to capture the young Chibiusa and eliminate the Sailor Guardians.
Her key relationships are largely defined by her selfish desires. Her unrequited love for Prince Demande is her central driving force, leading her to secretly attack him from the shadows when he becomes distracted by Sailor Moon, hoping to remove the rival for his attention. She holds a contemptuous rivalry with the Sailor Guardians, particularly Sailor Moon, whom she sees as an obstacle. Her relationship with the sinister Wiseman is one of desperation; she willingly goes to him to beg for the power to destroy her enemies and win Demande, despite being wary of his untrustworthiness.
Esmeraude’s character arc culminates in a tragic and ironic downfall. Driven by her jealousy and ambition, she accepts a magical tiara from Wiseman, believing it will grant her the power and title of queen. However, the tiara is powered by a dark, evil crystal, and the immense energy overwhelms her. Instead of becoming a queen, she is horrifically transformed into a mindless, rampaging black dragon, which one character describes as the physical manifestation of her own corrupted subconscious thoughts. In this bestial form, she attacks the Crystal Palace but is ultimately defeated and purified by Sailor Moon’s powerful attack. For a brief moment, she reverts to her human form, still reaching out for Prince Demande, before falling into a dark void to her death.
As a fighter, Esmeraude possesses several notable abilities. In her human form, her primary weapon is a large, sharp-edged fan, which she wields with skill in combat, implying knowledge of techniques like tessenjutsu. She can also project offensive magic, including the ability to throw dark energy balls or shoot waves of dark energy at her opponents. Her power increases dramatically and tragically when she transforms into her dragon form. In this state, she gains immense strength, durability, and the ability to breathe fire, withstanding multiple combined attacks from the Sailor Guardians before finally being defeated.
