Description
Ann is one of the two primary antagonists featured in the first story arc of Sailor Moon R. She arrives on Earth alongside her companion, Alan, as the sole survivors of an alien race from a distant planet that was destroyed. Both Ann and Alan were born from and sustained by a sentient entity known as the Doom Tree, which they depend on for their life force. As the Doom Tree began to die, they traveled to Earth with the mission of draining human life energy to feed the tree and ensure their own survival.
In her true form, Ann has pale green skin, long pink hair with distinct light blue streaks, and pointed ears. To blend into human society and get close to potential energy sources, she assumes the human identity of a teenager. Depending on the adaptation, this alias is known as Natsumi Ginga or Melissa. In this disguise, she enrolls in the same high school class as the protagonist, Usagi Tsukino.
Ann possesses a personality that is initially defined by selfishness, cruelty, and a petulant nature. She is often dismissive and rude toward Usagi and her friends, showing little interest in forming genuine bonds with them. However, her demeanor changes dramatically when she is around Mamoru Chiba, the human identity of Tuxedo Mask. She becomes infatuated with his appearance, describing him as attractive with a muscular build, and becomes determined to win his affection. This romantic interest fuels a fierce rivalry with Usagi, who also has feelings for Mamoru. Ann frequently devises elaborate schemes to capture his attention, such as cheating to win the lead role of Snow White in a school play specifically so she could rehearse a kissing scene with him, who was cast as the prince.
Ann’s primary motivation throughout the story is survival. She and Alan are desperate to keep the Doom Tree alive, as its death would mean their own. To accomplish this, they orchestrate attacks on the citizens of Tokyo. Alan plays a flute to summon creatures known as Cardians, and Ann is responsible for selecting which Cardian to deploy to drain energy from people. Her secondary, and often conflicting, motivation is her personal desire for Mamoru. This infatuation sometimes overrides her mission, as she actively avoids draining his energy and tries to sabotage his relationship with Usagi.
In the story, Ann serves as a direct foil to Usagi. While Usagi is clumsy and kind-hearted, Ann is calculated and malicious. Her presence and actions, along with Alan’s, are the catalyst that forces Luna to restore the memories and powers of the Sailor Guardians, who had forgotten their past lives after the previous battle. Ann’s role within the villainous duo is distinct from Alan’s; she is the one who physically goes to school and interacts with their targets, while Alan is more often shown playing the flute to generate monsters from their headquarters.
Key relationships define much of Ann’s character arc. Her relationship with Alan is complex. They present themselves as siblings to the outside world but are actually lovers and the last of their kind. Their partnership becomes strained on Earth as Ann develops feelings for Mamoru and Alan simultaneously develops feelings for Usagi, leading to jealousy and conflict between them. Her relationship with Usagi is one of open hostility and competition, primarily over Mamoru, but this rivalry eventually evolves as Ann witnesses the sincerity of Usagi’s friendships. Her unrequited crush on Mamoru is central to her actions; she constantly pursues him, becomes enraged when he shows affection for Sailor Moon, and tries to keep other girls away from him.
Ann undergoes a significant character development by the conclusion of the arc. She begins as a selfish being who does not understand human emotions, particularly love. She sees love as a possession or a transaction. However, during the final battle at the Doom Tree, the tree attempts to impale Alan with a sharp branch. In a moment of genuine selflessness, Ann jumps in front of the attack, sacrificing her own life to save his. This act of sacrifice demonstrates her final understanding of true love. After the Doom Tree is purified by Sailor Moon and reveals that it actually thrives on love, not just any energy, it uses its power to revive Ann. Having learned the meaning of love and sacrifice, Ann and Alan are given a second chance. They leave Earth together with the reborn tree to start a new life, now understanding the selfless nature of the bond they share.
In terms of notable abilities, Ann possesses several powers. She has the ability to change her appearance to blend in with humans, taking on a different hair color and skin tone. In combat, she can fire energy blasts from her hands. One of her known attacks is a gravitational force that can knock her opponents to the ground. Despite these powers, she is portrayed as being physically weaker than Alan, and she frequently runs out of energy, which forces her to rest or feed from the Doom Tree more often than her companion.
