Description
Ann, also known in some adaptations as Natalia, Natsumi Ginga, or Melissa, is one of the two primary antagonists featured in the first story arc of Sailor Moon R. She is an alien survivor from a distant planet, part of a species that was born from and sustained by a great sentient tree known as the Doom Tree or the Tree of Darkness. Alongside her companion Alan, also known as Ail, she travels to Earth as the sole survivor of her people, seeking a new source of energy to prevent the tree from dying, which would also mean her own end.

In her true form, Ann has long pink hair often accented with lighter streaks, pale green skin, and pointed ears, wearing a dark red and gold outfit that echoes a medieval or soft armor style. To blend into human society and gather energy discreetly, she adopts a human disguise as a student at the same middle school as the protagonist, Usagi Tsukino. In this guise, she appears as a girl with brown hair, using the name Natsumi Ginga or Melissa. Her personality in this form is often snobbish, selfish, and dismissive toward other girls, particularly Usagi, whom she views as a rival.

Ann's primary motivation throughout the arc is survival, both for herself and for the Doom Tree that gave her life. She and Alan work together to drain life energy from humans, which they believe is the only way to sustain their dying tree. Ann typically selects the Cardian monsters that are sent to extract this energy. However, her mission becomes complicated when she develops a genuine romantic interest in Mamoru Chiba, known as Darien in some versions. She becomes infatuated with his appearance and persistently schemes to gain his attention, even cheating to secure the lead role opposite him in a school production of Snow White in the hope of sharing a kiss.

Her role in the story is that of a secondary antagonist who, unlike a purely evil villain, operates from a place of desperation and ignorance. She is not inherently malicious but is ruthless in pursuing what she believes is necessary for her survival. Throughout her time on Earth, she struggles with human emotions she does not fully understand, particularly jealousy and love. She is frequently at odds with Usagi, not only over energy collection but also over Mamoru's affections, creating a personal rivalry that runs parallel to the larger conflict.

The key relationships that define Ann are with Alan and with Mamoru. Alan is her counterpart and fellow survivor; they were born together from the same tree and have only each other. Although they pose as siblings while on Earth, their bond is much deeper, though initially more utilitarian than romantic. Ann becomes jealous when Alan shows interest in other human girls, revealing a possessiveness she does not fully comprehend. Her feelings for Mamoru, however, represent her first true exposure to romantic love, and she pursues him with an almost obsessive determination, seeing him as the ideal human.

Over the course of the arc, Ann undergoes significant development. She begins as a cold and energy-efficient operative, showing little concern for the humans she drains. As she experiences jealousy, infatuation, and ultimately sacrifice, she begins to understand the nature of love, a concept her species had lost. In the final confrontation, when the Doom Tree attempts to kill Alan, Ann throws herself in front of the attack, taking the fatal blow to protect him. This act of selfless love finally awakens the true power of the tree, which reveals that it had never needed ordinary energy, but rather the energy generated by love. Purified by Sailor Moon and reborn as a small sprout, the tree uses its power to bring Ann back to life. Having learned the meaning of true love, Ann and Alan leave Earth together with the reborn tree to start a new life elsewhere, finally understanding the bond they share.

In terms of abilities, Ann is capable of firing energy blasts in her true alien form, often described as a gravity-based attack that can knock down opponents. She does not engage in direct physical combat as often as she relies on the Cardian monsters she selects and deploys. She also has the power to disguise herself as a human, though this form requires energy to maintain, and she visibly weakens when her energy reserves are low. Her connection to the Doom Tree is fundamental; as the tree weakens, so does she, forcing her to seek more human energy to sustain herself.
