Description
Calaveras, also known as Avery in some English adaptations, is a character from the Sailor Moon R anime and a member of the Black Moon Clan. She is the second oldest of the four Ayakashi Sisters, often referred to as the Specter Sisters, and serves as a counterpart to Sailor Venus. Her name is derived from the mineral calaverite.

In the anime, Calaveras is portrayed as a petty, arrogant, and vain individual who holds a disdainful view of humanity. She is particularly known for relentlessly teasing her older sister Petz, often making comments about her age and looks, which highlights a competitive and at times cruel dynamic between them. Unlike her more focused sister, Calaveras appears unwilling to undertake missions on her own, preferring to tag along on Petz's assignments and, on one occasion, even attempting to steal credit for a mission belonging to another sister, Berthier. She is also shown to be manipulative and uses a charming facade when it suits her purposes.

Motivations for Calaveras primarily revolve around her loyalty to the Black Moon Clan and her desire to defeat the Sailor Guardians. She shares her sisters' mission to spread dark energy across Tokyo. However, her personal motivations are also fueled by a sense of revenge against her younger sisters, Koan and Berthier, after they are purified and become human, viewing them as traitors. In her final mission, which is originally assigned to Petz, Calaveras urges her older sister to use a powerful artifact, the Black Moon Stick, to eliminate their now-good siblings and the Sailor Guardians.

Calaveras's role in the story is primarily as a secondary antagonist. Her most significant arc concludes when her sister Petz becomes corrupted by the Black Moon Stick's power. Shocked when Petz turns on her and attacks her with Dark Thunder, Calaveras is shown pity by Sailor Moon. This act of compassion, combined with the sight of her purified sisters, leads her to a heel realization. She comes to understand human love and betrays the Black Moon Clan by informing the Sailor Guardians about the stick's power. When Rubeus creates a time-vacuum on a bridge, Calaveras acts to save Petz from falling in, catching her with her whip. This act of saving her sister demonstrates her capacity for love and loyalty, redeeming her character. Ultimately, after the Sailor Guardians destroy the corrupted stick, Calaveras accepts purification by Sailor Moon's Silver Crystal and is transformed into a normal human woman. Along with her sisters, she later opens a cosmetics business.

In terms of abilities, Calaveras possesses powers typical of the Black Moon Clan. She is noted for her rhetorical talent and her ability to appear charming and amiable, which she uses to deceive others. Her primary offensive weapon is a whip she calls the Dark Love Whip, which is visually similar to Sailor Venus's Love-Me Chain. In the manga, her powers are more distinctly supernatural; she is a powerful medium capable of communicating with and channeling the spirits of the dead, including her deceased sisters, and using them to attack her enemies. She also uses this ability to channel the spirit of her commander, Rubeus. This mediumship ability is a key part of her mission in the manga, where she attempts to brainwash the people of Tokyo under the codename Code: 004, Operation Re-birth.
