Description
Petz is a member of the Black Moon Clan and the eldest of the four Spectre Sisters, also known as the Ayakashi Sisters, who appear as antagonists in the second story arc of the anime Sailor Moon R. Her name is taken from the mineral petzite, and she is designed as a dark counterpart to Makoto Kino, the Sailor Guardian known as Jupiter. In some English-language versions of the anime she is called Prizma.
Her background lies within the Black Moon Clan, a group descended from people who opposed the future utopia of Crystal Tokyo and were guided to the phantom planet Nemesis. Along with her younger sisters Koan, Berthier, and Calaveras, she is sent by the commander Rubeus to twentieth-century Earth to locate Chibiusa and obtain the Silver Crystal. She bears the clan's identifying mark, an upside-down black crescent on her forehead, and wears black crystal earrings, which allow clan members to teleport. Her appearance is distinctive: she has long dark green hair, typically worn in a bun, and dresses in a sleeveless short outfit with a decorated bodice, black fur trim on the shoulders, a black belt, long green gloves, black leggings, and short boots.
In personality, Petz is proud, haughty, and short-tempered, with a willingness to step over others in pursuit of personal glory and power. She often clashes with Calaveras, though the two frequently end up cooperating during their missions. Petz is also embittered by a past romance that ended badly, and she reacts sharply whenever Calaveras teases her about it. This history has made her guarded and cynical where men are concerned.
Her motivations shift over the course of the story. Early on, she is driven by ambition and a desire to prove herself within the Black Moon Clan, carrying out attacks on the present-day city as part of the clan's plan to weaken the foundations of Crystal Tokyo. After her sisters Koan and Berthier are purified and turn away from the clan, Rubeus gives Petz a stick that endlessly amplifies her dark power. He orders her to kill both the Sailor Guardians and her fallen sisters, warning her that she will not be allowed to return if she fails.
The stick changes Petz dramatically. Under its influence, she becomes far more selfish, power-hungry, and vengeful, and she gains the upper hand against the Sailor Guardians before turning on Calaveras and attempting to destroy her along with the other sisters. When the Guardians knock the stick away, her power drops again. Rubeus then reveals that he expected her to fail all along; his true goal was to lure the Sailor Guardians into the open and sacrifice all four sisters by activating the stick's real power, which summons a massive time-vacuum that threatens to consume everyone nearby.
Freed from the stick's corrupting influence, Petz becomes remorseful and decides to use the remaining power in her body to destroy the stick by throwing herself into the vortex. Her sisters stop her from making that sacrifice, and the Sailor Guardians succeed in destroying the vortex. Petz is then purified along with Calaveras, and the sisters are given a second chance. In the aftermath, Petz discovers a wounded Saphir, a member of the Black Moon Clan, and tends to him even though she initially suspects he has come to punish her sisters. It is then revealed that Saphir was the source of her earlier bitterness, as the two had been romantically involved. When Saphir is killed by Wiseman, Petz senses his death and is heartbroken, though she takes some comfort in remembering how he smiled for her.
Her relationships define much of her arc. With her sisters, she shares a complicated bond marked by rivalry, particularly with Calaveras, but also by a deep underlying loyalty; their willingness to protect her from self-destruction and her remorse after being freed from the stick show that this bond outweighs their squabbles. Her relationship with Rubeus is that of a subordinate to a commander who regards her as expendable, a betrayal that pushes her toward redemption. Her connection with Saphir is her most significant personal one, explaining her guarded attitude toward love and her eventual emotional vulnerability.
In terms of abilities, Petz wields dark electrical power, called Dark Thunder in the anime, which she uses in combat. She can also harness the power of the Black Crystal to create large-scale effects, such as a powerful tornado capable of capturing an opponent. Like other members of her clan, she can teleport using her earrings, and she operates a UFO from which she conducts her missions. When empowered by Rubeus's stick, her dark abilities are increased enormously until the stick is taken from her, and her own will is overwhelmed by the corrupting force it carries.
