Description
Haruka Ono is a first-year homeroom teacher at First Magic High School, serving as an integration counselor for classes 1-E and 1-A. Her professional role involves overseeing student welfare, managing mental health concerns, and maintaining classroom order. On the surface, she presents herself as a dedicated educator genuinely passionate about student counseling. Her caring demeanor includes a talent for managing emotional tension during conversations, which makes students more comfortable sharing their concerns. However, her school position is not her only occupation.
Beneath her teacher identity, Haruka works as an undercover investigator for the Public Safety Bureau, where she is known by the code name Miss Phantom or Water Phantom. This dual existence was not chosen willingly. After failing the entrance examination for magic high school, she attended a science-oriented high school before pursuing psychiatry at university and obtaining a medical license. Wanting to test her magical abilities, she began with minor pranks that escalated into criminal acts. Eventually, agents from Public Safety, who possessed magic that made them immune to her concealment abilities, caught her. Rather than face punishment, she was coerced into becoming a spy.
Haruka consistently maintains that her counseling work is not a disguise but her true calling. She feels a genuine responsibility toward her students and takes failures in this role seriously, particularly in cases such as Mibu Sayaka's situation. Despite her forced involvement in intelligence work, she wishes to leave the Bureau and return to a normal life as a mental health professional. Her enthusiasm for student welfare sometimes leads colleagues and students to tease her, as she tends to wear her emotions openly.
Standing approximately 160 centimeters tall, Haruka is described as a charming and attractive young woman who appears fresh out of university yet carries tangible experience. She dresses practically, often wearing items such as jeans, low-heeled boots, and a jacket reinforced with materials resistant to bullets and blades. Her hair and eyes are brown, and she has an adult appearance.
Haruka is a Born-Specialized magician, a type of magician with innate specialization in a single area. Her expertise lies in presence concealment or invisibility magic, a non-systematic magic that hides her existence from standard detection methods. This ability serves her well in undercover assignments. She has also received training in ninjutsu at an intermediate to advanced level under the guidance of Kokonoe Yakumo. This makes her a disciple of Yakumo and, in terms of training seniority, a junior to Tatsuya Shiba, who also studies under the same master. Her concealment magic is highly effective against most targets but can be perceived by Tatsuya's Elemental Sight and by Yakumo himself.
Haruka holds considerable pride in her capabilities as an agent. She gathers intelligence efficiently and reacts strongly when she feels slighted in this capacity, as shown when she investigated Fujibayashi Kyouko's background, only to be politely asked to cease her efforts. Her admiration for Kyouko dates back to their high school years, as Kyouko was a prominent figure at the Nine Schools Competition while Haruka, having failed the entrance exam, could not attend a magic high school.
By the year 2098, Haruka became caught in a power struggle within the Public Safety Bureau that endangered her life. Deciding to escape, she fled Japan with help from her mentor, Kokonoe Yakumo, seeking refuge first in the United States and later in Vancouver, Canada. There, unable to find recognition for her counseling qualifications, she took the alias Luca Fields and began working at a detective agency. During the events of Magian Company, she served as a guide for Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba during an investigation at Mount Shasta, having been introduced by Lena Fale. This reunion brought her back into contact with the world of magic she had once stepped away from.
Throughout her journey, Haruka Ono remains defined by the tension between her authentic desire to help others as a counselor and the shadowy obligations forced upon her by circumstances beyond her control.
