Description
Mayumi Saegusa is a central supporting character in The Irregular at Magic High School. She is the eldest daughter of the Saegusa family, which is one of the two most influential households among the Ten Master Clans, the ruling magical aristocratic families. Within her family, she is the third child, having two older half-brothers and two younger twin sisters, Kasumi and Izumi. Mayumi served as the Student Council President of First High School, the main setting of the series, and she entered the school as the top scorer on the entrance examination, demonstrating both her academic excellence and her high magical aptitude. She is considered a prodigy in the magic community, often referred to by the nicknames Elven Sniper for her extraordinary long-range precision shooting ability and Elven Princess for her beauty and talent. She was also part of the Triumvirate, the group of the three strongest third-year students at First High, alongside Mari Watanabe and Katsuto Juumonji.

Mayumi has a well-rounded and multifaceted personality. In public, she presents herself as graceful, confident, and responsible, fitting the role of a capable leader. However, beneath this composed exterior, she has a mischievous and playful side, often teasing those close to her. She can be scheming and enjoys playing the role of a little devil, but she genuinely cares for others in her own unique way, making her a natural older sister figure. Her primary motivations are to uphold the honor of her family and to protect her loved ones, which drives her actions both within the school and in the larger political arena of the magical world. She is also deeply aware of the social inequalities between Course 1 and Course 2 students at the school and works to bridge that divide.

As a magician, Mayumi is highly versatile and is considered a genius whose talents appear only once in a decade. She excels in all types of magic but is most famous for her long-range precision shooting, which involves firing magical projectiles with extreme accuracy. This ability is tied to her use of dry ice pellets accelerated to high speeds, earning her the Elven Sniper moniker. She is also noted for being an irregular magician, capable of combining both modern magic and a special perception ability, which is normally impossible for a single person. Despite her short stature, which limits her physical combat, her magical prowess and strategic thinking make her a formidable opponent. Her role in the story often places her as a bridge between the school setting and the high-stakes political conflicts of the Ten Master Clans, and she is involved in key events such as the Nine Schools Competition and the Yokohama Disturbance.

Mayumi's key relationships are central to her character. She is very close with her younger twin sisters, Kasumi and Izumi, sharing a protective and nurturing bond. Her friendship with Mari Watanabe and her working relationship with Katsuto Juumonji are significant, as the three of them together form the Triumvirate that works to eliminate inequality at school. She also has a notable and complex relationship with the protagonist, Tatsuya Shiba. She often teases him and is the only person at the school who is not intimidated by his demeanor. Their relationship evolves over time, moving from formal interactions to intimate and special closeness, though it never fully develops into romance. Mayumi views Tatsuya as trustworthy and reliable, almost like a younger brother, while she herself harbors deeper, unacknowledged feelings for him, a fact that even her friends notice. Throughout the story, Mayumi develops from a confident school leader into a more complex figure deeply involved in the politics of the magical community, forced to confront the weight of her family name and her own responsibilities.
