TV-Series
Description
Azusa Nakajou is a graduate of First High School, where she served as a secretary before eventually becoming the Student Council President. She is a petite girl, standing only 150 centimeters tall and weighing 41 kilograms, with a childish face and features that often lead to her being compared to a small animal like a squirrel. Her appearance is accentuated by her orange hair and green eyes, giving her a youthful look that belies her position and capabilities. Despite her small stature, she is one of the top students in her cohort, excelling in both theoretical knowledge and practical magic skills.
In terms of personality, Azusa is intelligent and diligent but possesses a timid and reserved nature. She has a weak resolve when placed under pressure or faced with high expectations, often becoming overwhelmed by the demands of leadership. This was most evident when the Student Council pressured her to run for the presidency, a request she initially begged them to reconsider. She only conceded after being alarmed by stories of a past election that spiraled out of control and being tempted by the promise of a new, high-end CAD device. Despite her general shyness, she becomes remarkably animated and passionate when discussing magic technology, to the point that her peer Mari Watanabe describes her as a device otaku, a label that proves to be quite accurate. Her deep admiration for the mysterious and reclusive CAD engineer known as Taurus Silver is a significant part of this passion, and she becomes an enthusiastic supporter of the Silver series of CADs.
Azusa's role in the story is primarily that of a supporting character within First High School's Student Council and a technical specialist. She serves as one of the technician representatives for the school during the Nine Schools Competition, where she is responsible for CAD maintenance. Her technical skills are considerable enough that she volunteers to act as an aide to Tatsuya Shiba, helping him examine coding language for a new Activation Sequence. Her technical acumen also leads her to become suspicious of Tatsuya; after hearing students from another school compare his programming skill to that of Taurus Silver, she begins to suspect that the famous engineer and her seemingly unremarkable classmate might be the same person. Later, as Student Council President, she relies on the advice of Tatsuya and his sister Miyuki to navigate troublesome matters.
Her key relationships include her friendship with Mayumi Saegusa, the previous Student Council President, who affectionately calls her A-chan, a nickname Azusa publicly denies but which Tatsuya thinks suits her. Her relationship with Tatsuya is complex; she is initially somewhat wary of him and his unknown power, but she holds no ill will toward him for his status as a second-course student. She comes to trust his judgment easily, which makes her somewhat easy for him to influence. She shares a direct and familiar dynamic with her classmate Hattori, who is described as her rival from their entrance into high school.
Azusa undergoes a degree of development from a technically gifted but hesitant student into a capable leader. Despite her initial reluctance, she accepts the role of Student Council President and fulfills her duties. Her personal growth is also tied to her professional aspirations, as she aims to become a Magic Artificer, a career path that aligns perfectly with her love for magic engineering.
Notably, Azusa possesses a unique magical ability known as Azusayumi. This is an Informational Manipulative Outer-Systematic Type Magic, which is a form of Mental Interference Magic. Azusayumi produces a hallucinatory sound, described as the subconscious sound of the tides or waves of Pushions, which causes the consciousness of a group of people to concentrate on it, putting them into a trance. The effect lasts only about three seconds, but this is sufficient to effectively clamp down on panic and gather the full attention of a crowd. She activates this magic using a pendant from her necklace, which is actually a CAD core designed to support only this single spell. When activated, the pendant forms into a miniature magic staff, or in the anime adaptation, a bow that she must draw to activate the magic.
