TV-Series
Description
Erika Chiba is the youngest daughter of the Chiba family, a distinguished magical clan known for merging swordsmanship with arcane arts and counted among the Hundred Families, which are just below the Ten Master Clans in the Japanese magical hierarchy. She is a quarter German, as her grandfather on her mother's side was from Germany, connecting her to the Rosen family, which leads a major CAD development corporation. Erika was born to the family head, Jouichirou Chiba, and his lover, Anna Rosen Katori, during the illness of his legal wife. Because of this, she was not permitted to use the Chiba surname until after her mother's death, which occurred shortly before she entered high school, and she was relegated to living in a separate building from the main household, fostering a lingering resentment toward her father. She has two older half-brothers, Toshikazu and Naotsugu, to whom she is close, as well as an older half-sister.
Physically, Erika is a beautiful and lively young girl with bright red-orange hair which she grows out over the course of the series and typically ties back into a ponytail, along with sharp facial features and reddish-brown eyes. Her height is 162 centimeters and her weight is 52 kilograms. Her personality is overtly cheerful, optimistic, and energetic, with a tendency to become easily carried away. She often addresses people she has just met in a friendly and familiar manner, which Tatsuya Shiba once thought of as being overly familiar. Despite her social and extroverted exterior, she has a more aloof and cold interior; her old friends have called her cold and whimsical, and she has admitted to being negligent toward quickly forming relationships, having spent most of her elementary and middle school years alone. She also has a habit of talking to herself, which she has hidden since starting high school.
Having trained in combat from a young age, Erika is a master of the Chiba-style kenjutsu, specializing in swordsmanship and close-quarters combat. Her physical reflexes and speed are among the best in her family, and she has developed what is called a Swordsman's Eye, which allows her to accurately predict the movements of her opponents and defeat those with greater raw magical power. Her primary magical abilities focus on Speed-Type and Convergence-Type magic rather than broad systematic magic, which aligns with her status as a Course 2 student. She utilizes Self-Acceleration magic to enhance her physical movements and Fortification Magic, also known as Convergent Systematic Reinforcement, to strengthen her hollow baton-shaped CAD to the point that it can cut through solid metal. Her signature and secret technique is Yamatsunami, a Speed-Type and Weight-Type magic that first minimizes the inertia of the user and their weapon while closing in on a target at high speed, then transfers all of the stored inertia from the movement into the point of impact, allowing her to strike with a force of up to ten tons. She uses the specialized blade Orochimaru to execute this technique, and later a downsized CAD-integrated version named Mizuchimaru. She also employs other secret techniques of the Chiba Family, including Yamatsunami Tsubamegaeshi, a variant where the inertia is restored on an upward slice, and Kirikage, a Non-Systematic magic that severs the psionic body of an opponent, depriving them of their motor functions. Additionally, Tatsuya taught her Gram-Cut, a counter-magic that severs magic sequences in the information dimension.
Erika is a student at First High School, initially in Class E and later in Class F. She was one of the first characters introduced, becoming a classmate and a constant friend and companion of Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba not long after the start of the series. She actively participates in many key events, aiding in repelling the Blanche terrorist attack on the school, infiltrating the Nine Schools Competition banquet undercover, and assisting in the rescue of hostages during the Yokohama Disturbance. Her combat prowess in the Yokohama incident earn her high praise from senior officials in national defense and public safety, but the Chiba family keeps her out of the spotlight to maintain her as their secret weapon, leading to rumors referring to her as the Phantom Sword Princess of the Chiba family.
Her relationships are defined by a complex web of loyalties and rivalries. She shares a pseudo-antagonistic but close friendship with Leonhard Saijou, the two frequently bickering and quarreling, much to the amusement of their peers who often suggest they are a couple, an accusation both vehemently deny. Despite this, she personally trains Leo in sword-based magic to improve his fighting ability. She is childhood friends with Mikihiko Yoshida, having known him before entering high school due to their families' connections, and is one of the few people aware of his circumstances and past. She teases him but also offers steadfast encouragement, especially during his comeback at the Nine Schools Competition. With Miyuki Shiba, she shares a bond of mischievous trust, trading jabs about Miyukis devotion to her brother Tatsuya, while with Mizuki Shibata, she contrasts her own impulsiveness with Mizukis calmness, and the two are often considered best friends. She displays a blatant antagonism toward Mari Watanabe, the Chief of the Public Morals Committee, because she deems the upperclassman unsuitable to be the girlfriend of her idolized second half-brother, Naotsugu, and accuses Mari of distracting him from his swordsmanship. Her relationship with her eldest half-brother, Toshikazu, is defined by competition and adversity.
Regarding Tatsuya, Erika has implied and hinted-at romantic feelings for him, which are complicated and subdued. She has stated that his existence has changed her and that she is attracted to him, even calling him a hunk. She once led her classmates to cheer for him when he was feeling depressed on stage, and she has been intent on getting stronger since meeting him. However, she does not want her romantic feelings to ruin her friendships and holds herself back from acting on them. When she inadvertently learned of Tatsuya's connection to the dangerous Yotsuba clan, she deliberately chose not to pursue the matter further and suppressed any potential romance, not wanting to put herself in danger and recognizing that it would cause conflict with Miyuki. Her character develops from someone who enjoys the troubles caused by her interactions with Tatsuya to a person who takes on a genuine sense of crisis and responsibility, especially after the death of her half-brother Toshikazu during a terrorist incident. After graduating from First High School, she enrolls in a magic university and travels around Japan during long breaks.
