TV-Series
Description
Masaki Ichijō is the eldest son and heir of the Ichijō family, one of the Ten Master Clans that govern the Japanese magic world. He attends the National Magic University Affiliated Third High School, where he serves as a discipline committee member and quickly becomes recognized as the de facto leader of his school due to his natural charisma and sense of responsibility. Born in 2079, he is of average height with a muscular build, broad shoulders, and a dignified, handsome face often described as resembling a young samurai. His appearance is conventionally attractive, and he draws attention from female classmates, though he rarely reciprocates their interest.

His background is marked by early exposure to real combat. At the age of thirteen, he volunteered for a militia during the Sado Invasion and fought on the front lines, earning the epithet Crimson Prince. This name, which he personally dislikes for being overly grandiose, refers to the blood of both enemies and allies that stained him during battle. This experience gave him a maturity and battlefield instinct far beyond his years and instilled in him a strong sense of noblesse oblige. He believes that the magicians who serve his family are not tools but comrades to be protected, and he consistently places himself at the forefront of any conflict rather than commanding from safety.

His personality is earnest and traditional. He values straightforwardness, honor, and proper manners, such as kneeling before entering his father's room and requesting permission in the correct formal manner. He is not small-minded and can accept painful advice, even from rivals. He is also somewhat shy: when thanked, he changes the subject to hide his embarrassment, and he can become flustered and over-explain himself when caught off guard. His sister Akane describes him as honest to a fault and unable to tell lies. He has a dreamy side, and his sister notes that his ideal type is a traditional, obedient Yamato Nadeshiko. He holds a traditional view of gender roles and feels strong discomfort when men abandon women in dangerous situations. Despite his composed exterior, Tatsuya Shiba observes that he is unexpectedly weak against unforeseen events.

His primary motivation is a sense of duty as the future head of the Ichijō clan. He is also driven by a fierce rivalry with Tatsuya Shiba, whom he sees as an adversary to be defeated honorably. He openly acknowledges Tatsuya as a rival and feels that he must settle his grudge against him before he can properly court Tatsuya's sister, Miyuki. His feelings for Miyuki Shiba are the other major motivation in his life. He fell in love with her at first sight during the Nine Schools Competition welcoming party and later danced with her. However, over time, his feelings evolve from romantic love into something closer to admiration or worship. By the time they attend the National Magic University, he still treats her specially, but those close to him notice that his passion has cooled and that he seems satisfied merely by her presence, like admiring a work of art. He himself eventually recognizes that what he feels is not love but reverence.

His role in the story is that of a foil and rival to Tatsuya Shiba. He first appears during the Nine Schools Competition as a representative of Third High School and later becomes a recurring figure in major conflicts, including the Yokohama Incident and the pursuit of Zhou Gongjin. He is a national strategic-class magician, certified in 2097, and his strategic-level magic is Ocean Blast, a large-scale version of his family's Explosion magic that targets bodies of water. In direct combat, he is a long-range artillery specialist who favors overwhelming firepower and straightforward tactics. He is weaker at trick plays and deception, and his friend Shinkurō Kichijōji advises him to improve his situational awareness. His specialty magic, Explosion, vaporizes liquid inside a target to cause a destructive expansion. Against living beings, this is lethally effective. His magical formulas are so robust that even Tatsuya's decomposition requires a massive amount of psions to break down, far more than an ordinary magician could produce in a day.

Key relationships include his friendship with Shinkurō Kichijōji, who serves as his strategist and closest confidant. Kichijōji sees himself as Masaki's chief of staff and takes quiet pride in complementing his weaknesses. Their bond remains strong even after they both advance to university. With Tatsuya Shiba, Masaki maintains a rivalry laced with mutual respect. Tatsuya acknowledges his combat skill, calling him troublesome as an enemy but reliable as an ally, and occasionally teases him to get information out of him. Masaki, for his part, sees Tatsuya as an obnoxious but worthy adversary and is determined to defeat him fairly. With Miyuki Shiba, his relationship is one-sided. He approaches her openly and even proposes marriage after her engagement to Tatsuya is announced, but she never reciprocates his feelings, as her devotion is entirely to her brother. With his family, he has a warm but sometimes strained relationship. His younger sisters, Akane and Ruri, are somewhat cheeky, and he thinks his relationship with them is not particularly close, but others see a strong sibling bond. His father, Gōki, is strict and expects him to be worthy of the clan leadership.

His development over the course of the story is subtle but significant. He learns to accept advice, to collaborate with his rival when necessary, and to recognize the true nature of his own emotions. By the end of the high school arc, he admits to himself that his feelings for Miyuki are not romantic love but admiration and worship, which allows him to begin interacting with her on more honest terms. He also begins to grapple with the political and social pressures placed on him as a member of the Ten Master Clans, showing a growing awareness of the complexities beyond simple combat prowess. In the sequel series Magian Company, he continues to mature into a leader who must balance his family's interests, his personal honor, and his responsibilities as a strategic-class magician.
